How to Make Cake Mix Cobbler
Follow along to learn how to make cake mix cobbler!
- Step One: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Step Two: Spread the frozen fruit in a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- Step Three: Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the top of the fruit. Tip: Gently massage the cake mix while still in the bag to break up any lumps.
- Step Four: Pour 2 cups Sprite evenly over the top of the cake mix to cover. Tilt the pan back and forth to help cover the dry cake mix. Add more Sprite (½ cup or more) if you notice some dry spots. Adding too much Sprite may create too much liquid on the bottom so be aware.
- Step Five: Bake for 45 minutes or until the berries are cooked and the top is browned. Let cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

What to Serve With It
- Vanilla Ice Cream: The classic pairing—its creamy coolness melts into the warm cobbler for a heavenly bite.
- Whipped Cream: Light and fluffy, it adds just the right touch of sweetness without overpowering the cobbler.
- Caramel Sauce: Drizzle a little over the top for an extra indulgent treat.
- Fresh Berries: Add a pop of color and freshness by garnishing with a handful of fresh fruit.
- Hot Coffee or Tea: A warm beverage complements the dessert’s sweetness and rounds out the perfect cozy treat.

Variations and Substitutions
- Fruit Choices: Swap the mixed berries for other frozen fruits like peaches, cherries, or a tropical mix to change the flavors.
- Cake Mix Flavors: Try yellow or vanilla cake mix for a richer flavor, or experiment with lemon or spice cake mix for a unique twist.
- Beverage Options: If you don’t have Sprite, use another clear soda like 7UP or ginger ale for a hint of spice. You could also try Coca-Cola and a chocolate cake mix! Yum!
- Fresh or Canned Fruit: If you’re out of frozen fruit, fresh or canned fruit works too—just adjust the baking time slightly for fresh fruit and drain canned fruit well.
- Add Nuts: Sprinkle chopped pecans or almonds over the cake mix for extra crunch and flavor.
- Spices: Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the fruit for a warm, spiced flavor perfect for fall.

Storage Instructions
- Refrigerator: Once cooled, cover the cobbler tightly with plastic wrap or transfer it to an airtight container. It will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze leftover cobbler for up to 3 months. Place it in a freezer-safe container or wrap it well in aluminum foil. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheating: Warm the cobbler in the oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes or until heated through. For smaller portions, use the microwave in 30-second intervals. Pro Tip: To keep the topping crisp, reheat leftovers in the oven instead of the microwave whenever possible.

Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Break Up the Cake Mix: Massage the cake mix while it’s still in the bag to get rid of any lumps before sprinkling it over the fruit.
- Spread Evenly: Make sure the cake mix covers the fruit completely for the best texture and flavor.
- Pour Soda Gradually: Add the Sprite slowly and evenly across the top to moisten the cake mix without over-saturating it.
- Tilt the Pan: If you notice dry spots, gently tilt the pan to help the liquid spread without needing to pour more soda.
- Keep an Eye on It: Oven temperatures vary, so check the cobbler around the 40-minute mark to ensure the top doesn’t over-brown.
- Serve Warm: This cobbler is best enjoyed warm, straight out of the oven, with your favorite toppings like ice cream or whipped cream.
- Don’t Overdo the Soda: Too much soda can result in a soggy bottom layer, so stick to the recipe’s measurements and adjust sparingly.

This is an easy recipe and I followed it exactly. It was a disaster! The fruit was bubbly, the top was brown, but when I spooned out the servings, there was dry cake mix underneath. I wonโt try it again.
I just made this cobbler with blueberries using 2 1/2 cups of 7UP and it came out like blueberry soup. I let it sit for 30 minutes thinking it would settle but it didn’t. I drained almost all the juice. 2 1/2 cups of 7UP was way too much. Very disappointed.
Can you use a cherry pie filling for this.
I haven’t tried it with a pie filling only the frozen fruit so I’m not sure!
Mine was watery too but I think the problem was I didnt use a 9×13! I used a 9×9 .. thinking it needs to be spread out
I made this with wild huckleberries. It’s delicious.
Has anyone ever used Angel Food cake mix? It is all I have at home right now…
I have a box of cake mix and a bag of mixed berries and this was the exact kind of recipe I was searching for!! Thanks so much. Canโt wait to try it!!ย
I made this cobbler with fresh frozen rhubarb. I used a golden cave mix. I sprinkled it with a little stevia and used a clear black cherry pop. I know it sounds weird, but it actually came out quite good.
can you use flavored carbonated water instead of sprite? Was wondering if it would still be sweet enough?
I’m not sure because I’ve never tried it like that! If you do end up trying it, let us know how it turned out.
There’s a lot of sugar in the carbonated pop and i think that is what helps to make the cobbler sweet. So using flavored carbonated water that doesn’t have much sweetness might not make the dessert sweet enough?
Has anyone tried this with gliten free cake mix?
No, I haven’t – sorry!
I made your recipe for cake mix cobbler, you mentioned in the recipe to use a can of sprite, then you say use 2 1/2cups of sprite (which I did) and it was very soupy, the liquid stayed in the bottom of the pan. What did I do wrong?
Debbie Stadick.
Exact same thing just happened to me! And there were still tons of dry spots at the top that would not stay covered.
I had the same problem I think it should read 250 ml of sprite (1 can).
Yes I made one today with GF cake mix( golden) and fresh berries and used a can of Lemon Lime sparkling water as thatโs all I had. ย Turned out great.ย
DO you use regular or diet sprite?
I used regular.
You now can buy sugar free cake mix, so I am about to try this recipe. It should be pretty healthy without the sugar and the melted butter. I will leave another comment to let you know how it goes over as my potluck contribution this evening.
Used a strawberry ale for strawberry cobbler. It got rave reviews at a meeting.
Does the pan need to be greased?
Can one use canned fruit ?
Yes, you can.
Tried this tonight with chocolate cake, Dr Pepper and fresh picked blackberries. Yummm
Looks and sounds delicious, i have cherries, and blueberries in my freezer gonna try both, for a reunion. Thanks for the recipe.
I am a old guy (66), How come when I took the cobbler out the soda never soaked into the cake mix.
It floated on the top of the mix. Only about a quarter of it was edible. That was very good. Just wondering where
I goofed up. This looks so easy.
I think this cake mix cobbler may turn out to be one of my favorite desserts. I haven’t tried to make it yet. However, I love fruit and I think this would make a wonderful dessert with some dream whip on top. Thank you for this recipe
