    How to Make Blueberry Cobbler

    • Step One: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray or line it with parchment paper.
    • Step Two: Spread the frozen blueberries evenly on the bottom of the pan and drizzle the maple syrup all over them.
    • Step Three: Sprinkle the cinnamon all over the blueberries and then sprinkle the cake mix evenly all over the top. You may need to spread it slightly to have an even layer on top.

What to Serve with Blueberry Cobbler

Choose the best accompaniments to your Blueberry Cobbler and enjoy your delicious dessert.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Different Fruits: You can use blueberries with different berries and fruits. Adding in strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries will create a fantastic combination of flavors that will change the recipe up.
    • Add Citrus: Adding some lemon juice and lemon zest or a little orange juice to your blueberry mix can provide a delicious brightness to the recipe. Just make sure to taste as you go to ensure you aren’t adding in so much that it becomes overpowering.
    • Use Brown Sugar: Brown sugar can give your cobbler a more pronounced flavor. Swap out some of the maple syrup for a little bit of brown sugar to change up the flavor profile.
    • Swap the Cake Mix: You can get adventurous by changing the cake mix flavor you use to create this recipe.  Use yellow cake mix, lemon cake mix, or even funfetti cake mix to add a little party to your plate.

    Storage Instructions

If you end up having some leftover cobbler, the good news is that it is pretty easy to store for later. Store your blueberry cobbler in an airtight container in the fridge for the best results. It will keep well for about 3-4 days. It can then be enjoyed cold from the refrigerator or reheated if you would rather have it warm.

    Can I Freeze?

Yes, this blueberry cobbler recipe can be frozen for 2-3 months. It will keep well if wrapped properly using plastic wrap and then a layer of aluminum foil. This will help to keep the cobbler from getting freezer burn. To reheat your cobbler, let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator and place it in a 350F oven until heated through—approximately 10-15 minutes.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Prevent over-browning: If you notice that the topping of your cobbler is browning too quickly, you can tent the cobbler with aluminum foil during the latter part of the baking time. This will help prevent excessive browning and allow the filling to cook through.
    • Allow it to rest: Once the blueberry cobbler is baked, it’s a good idea to allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the simple blueberry filling to set slightly, making it easier to portion and serve without falling apart.
    • Properly distribute the topping: To ensure proper baking and coverage of the top crust, drop even spoonfuls of the cake mix across the surface of the blueberry filling. This allows the topping to spread and meld together during the baking process.
    • Thicken the filling: Blueberries can release a lot of juice when cooked, resulting in a watery and runny filling. If you want your cobbler to have a thicker filling, add a tablespoon or two of cornstarch to the blueberry mixture before cooking. This will help absorb some extra liquid and create a thicker consistency.

    What is a Cobbler?

A cobbler is a baked dessert with a fruit filling topped with dough or a biscuit top. Traditionally, a cobbler is made by placing a sweetened fruit filling, like apples, berries, and peaches, in a baking dish, then topping it with dough or batter, and then baking it.

    Difference Between Cobbler and Crisp

The main difference between a cobbler and a crisp lies in the texture of the topping.

    • Cobbler: Cobbler typically has a thicker and more biscuit-like or cakey topping. The dough or batter is spooned or dropped over the fruit filling, and as it bakes, it rises and becomes soft, fluffy, and somewhat cakey.
    • Crisp: A crisp has a crispy and crumbly topping. It is usually made by combining flour, sugar, butter, and often oats or nuts to create a mixture sprinkled over the fruit filling. As it bakes, the topping becomes golden brown, creating a crisp and crumbly texture.

    Can I Use Fresh Blueberries?

You can absolutely use fresh blueberries for this recipe. Remember that fresh blueberries and other fresh fruit will likely become more watery while baking than frozen ones. Adding a tablespoon or two of cornstarch to the fruit mixture before baking is a good idea to ensure it thickens up a bit. Be sure to use at least 16 ounces of blueberries, regardless of whether they are fresh or frozen.

What Other Fruits Can I Use?

There are a variety of other fruits that can be used to create delicious fruit cobblers. It is important to note that some fruits will require a different baking time than blueberries.

    • Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are popular choices for a cobbler. They provide a burst of sweet-tart flavor and vibrant colors.
    • Stone Fruits: Peaches, nectarines, plums, and cherries are all excellent options. These juicy fruits add a delightful sweetness and pair well with the topping.
    • Apples: Apples are a classic choice for cobblers. Varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala work well because they hold their shape during baking and offer a slightly tart flavor.
    • Pears: Pears, such as Bartlett, Bosc, or Anjou, can be a delicious and slightly more delicate alternative to other fruits in a cobbler. They bring a mellow sweetness and soft texture to the dessert.
    • Tropical Fruits: If you want to experiment with unique flavors, tropical fruits like mangoes or pineapples can be used in a cobbler. They add a tropical twist and can be combined with other fruits to create an astounding flavor profile.
    • Mixed Fruits: Don’t be afraid to combine different fruits in your cobbler. For example, combining berries with peaches or apples with raspberries can create delightful flavor profiles and add variety to your dessert.

What Other Pan Sizes Can I Use?

When making this recipe, it is suggested that you use a 9×13-inch pan. If you want to use a square baking dish, you must adjust the recipe measurements or cooking time. You can also use individual ramekins to make smaller servings. Just divide the cobbler filling and topping amongst the ramekins. Make sure that you adjust the baking time accordingly.

Can I Substitute the Cake Mix with a Homemade Batter?

This easy blueberry cobbler recipe is made easier using a store-bought cake mix. While you can choose a homemade cake mix, you would want to use just the dry ingredients to top the cobbler.

Can I Make Blueberry Cobbler Ahead of Time and Reheat it?

You absolutely can. Just make sure to store it properly in the refrigerator before reheating. You can also make this easy blueberry cobbler ahead of time and freeze it. Just make sure to allow it to thaw before reheating.
