What to Serve with Gingerbread Waffles

There are several things you can serve with your gingerbread waffles. Serve them alongside your favorite brunch or breakfast recipes to create an impressive spread.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Spices: Adjust the spice levels to your flavor preference. You can increase or decrease the amounts of ground ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg for a spicier or milder flavor. This will make the waffles just right.
    • Milk: Feel free to use your choice of milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk, if you prefer a dairy-free option. You don’t have to use cow’s milk to make these waffles delicious.
    • Vanilla Extract: Experiment with different extracts like almond extract, orange extract, or even a touch of rum extract to add a unique twist. Adding in other extracts can change the entire flavor profile of the dish.
    • Toppings: Get creative with your toppings. Try fresh fruit like sliced bananas or berries, chopped nuts, yogurt, or a dusting of powdered sugar. You can also add a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce.
    • Texture: If you prefer crispier waffles, you can add a little more oil to the batter or cook them for a bit longer in the waffle iron. For a softer texture, reduce the cooking time.
    • Add-Ins: Enhance your waffles with add-ins like chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or crystallized ginger for extra flavor and texture. These little twists can change the waffles and make them even more exciting.
    • Serving Suggestions: While the recipe suggests maple syrup, butter, or whipped cream, consider serving your gingerbread waffles with other options like Greek yogurt, fruit compote, or a scoop of ice cream for a decadent treat.

    Storage Instructions

Leftovers of these fluffy gingerbread waffles? Not likely. They are much too delicious not to be devoured all at once. On the off chance that you do end up with a few leftovers, you can easily store them in the fridge. Put them in an airtight container and place them in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    Can I Freeze?

Absolutely. If you want to prepare extras of this recipe or have leftovers, place them in a freezer-safe airtight container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months. To enjoy them, pop the frozen waffles in your toaster or bake them in the oven for 8-10 minutes.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Preheated Waffle Maker: Ensure your waffle iron is thoroughly preheated before pouring in the batter. Preheating the waffle iron will prevent them from sticking and ensure they cook evenly.
    • Don’t Overmix: When combining the wet and dry ingredients, be careful not to overmix the batter. Overmixing can result in tough waffles. It’s okay if there are a few lumps in the batter, especially if you want extra fluffy waffles.
    • Grease the Waffle Iron: Even if your waffle iron has a non-stick surface, it’s a good idea to use cooking spray or a light oil brush to prevent sticking. This will also help your waffles get that crispy, crunchy exterior.
    • Cooking Time: Cooking times may vary depending on your waffle iron. Just cook them until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.
    • Keep Waffles Warm: If you’re making a batch of waffles and want to keep them warm while preparing the others, place them on a wire rack or baking sheet in a 200-degree preheated oven. This will help keep them crispy.
    • Make Ahead: You can prepare the waffle batter the night before and refrigerate it. This will save you time in the morning, and the flavors will have a chance to meld for even better taste.
    • Syrup Warm-Up: Warm the maple syrup before serving for a cozy touch. You can do this in the microwave or on the stovetop. Drizzling warm maple syrup over your waffles will add an elegant flair to your breakfast.

    Can I Make Ahead?

Yes, you can make these homemade waffles ahead of time. You can either store them in the fridge or the freezer. When you are ready to enjoy them, put them in your toaster or oven to reheat them.

Why Didn’t My Waffles Get Crispy?

    • Batter Too Thick: If the waffle mix is too thick, it can result in waffles that are softer and cake-like. Ensure that your batter is the right consistency; it should be thick but pourable.
    • Waffle Iron Not Hot Enough: A waffle iron not preheated adequately can lead to soft waffles. Make sure your waffle iron is fully heated before adding the batter. Most waffle irons have an indicator light to signal when they’re ready.
    • Overmixing the Batter: Overmixing the batter can lead to dense and less crispy waffles, altering the texture of the waffles themselves. Mix the wet and dry ingredients just until combined. It’s okay if there are small lumps in the batter.
    • Undercooking: If you didn’t cook the waffles long enough, they may not have had sufficient time to get that crispy texture. Follow the recommended cooking time for your waffle iron, or extend the cooking time slightly if needed.
    • Not Using Enough Oil or Cooking Spray: If your waffle iron isn’t properly greased, the waffles may stick and not crisp up. Be sure to grease the waffle iron generously with cooking spray or a small amount of oil.
