Nothing beats a hot creamy soup on a cold day. It warms your bones as it fills your belly. There’s just something so special about a bowl of homemade soup.

This easy creamy chicken noodle soup can be a complete meal if you want it to. I serve mine with dinner rolls and I’m usually full after one bowl. That creamy texture and the noodles, tender chicken and veggies are filling. It beats a can of chicken noodle soup every time!

I’ll often make extra chicken for dinner just so I can have leftover chicken to make this delicious recipe. I love adding fresh herbs to mine, but you can use dried herbs as well. The creamy broth always brightens my day.

What to Serve with Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

Though it’s delicious on its own, here are some great options to serve with your bowl of soup.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Instead of using all milk or half and half, use 2 ½ cups of milk plus 1⁄3 cup heavy cream.
    • Substitute cooked white rice for the egg noodles.
    • Use 3 ⅔ cups water plus 4 chicken bouillon cubes instead of the chicken broth. You can also use homemade chicken stock.
    • Use a store-bought cooked rotisserie chicken to save time cooking your own.
    • Use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder instead of freshly minced garlic. You can also use 1 teaspoon of onion powder instead of using the yellow onion.
    • Add fresh herbs. Use 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme or fresh rosemary.
    • Add 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning to season the soup. You can also use seasoned salt, a bay leaf and dried oregano.
    • Use freshly chopped carrots and frozen peas if you prefer. You will need to let the soup simmer longer to cook the carrots completely though.
    • If you like your soup with less noodle and more broth, use only 1 cup of dry egg noodles.

    Storage Instructions

Store leftover soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I don’t recommend freezing this soup because of the cream base that causes texture changes when frozen.

How Should I Cook and Season the Chicken?

As this recipe calls for cooked chicken, you’ll need to do this step, use leftovers or a store-bought rotisserie chicken.

The chicken can be cooked and seasoned any way you like. I prefer to use chicken breasts, but you could also use chicken thighs if you prefer dark meat.

I season the raw chicken breasts with extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. I bake it in the oven at 400°F for 35 to 40 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

    Can I Use Rotisserie Chicken?

Yes! I love using rotisserie chicken in my soup recipes. Buy a cooked rotisserie chicken from the grocery and shred the chicken with a fork. Use that shredded chicken in your soup recipe! If there’s any chicken leftover, you can make chicken sandwiches. Yum!

What is the Best Pasta for Chicken Soup?

Egg noodles are the best for chicken noodle soup. However, you can try some other kinds of small pasta like macaroni, rotini or orzo.

Zoodles (zucchini noodles) are a great option as well!
