Butterscotch Steamer
This butterscotch steamer is a complete dream as it’s made with just a handful of ingredients and is ready in a record 5 minutes! It’s one of my go-to sweet treats during the fall and winter months, and it just so happens to be 100% caffeine-free.
Seriously, it’s so hot and comforting with its classic butterscotch and caramel-like flavor! In my book, it’s the perfect recipe for those cozy evenings on the couch where you’re curled up with a good book and a comfy blanket!
I usually sprinkle my steamer with a bit of cinnamon to give it extra warmth and a bit of spice. But you can easily experiment with any topping you want.
I’d say that stirring through melted chocolate is a decent idea. But why not pop some whipped cream and marshmallows for a different take on a typical hot chocolate?
Whatever you choose to do, I recommend having a few delicious cookies to hand for dipping.
Don’t get me wrong, this recipe tastes excellent flying solo. But there’s nothing better than curing mid-afternoon munchies with bougie milk and cookies!
Now I’ll drink to that.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s ready in 5 minutes!
- It’s packed with warming flavors and is ridiculously creamy.
- The smooth texture and rich caramel-like flavor will suit the entire family.
- Perfect for any season but is particularly comforting during the wintertime.
Ingredients
The full printable recipe card with measurements and instructions is found at the bottom of the post.
- Milk: I suggest using whole milk for extra creaminess, but you shouldn’t lose too much flavor with low or nonfat milk.
- Butter: An essential ingredient for creating butterscotch!
- Brown sugar: If you use darker sugar, your butterscotch steamer will have a deeper molasses flavor. Light brown or golden brown sugar also works well.
- Cinnamon (optional)
How to Make a Butterscotch Steamer
Follow along to learn how to make a butterscotch steamer.
- Step One: Heat the milk in a pot over medium-low heat
- Step Two: Once the milk is hot, remove it from the heat.
- Step Three: Stir in butter and brown sugar until the butter is melted and the brown sugar dissolves.
- Step Four: Sprinkle it with cinnamon to give it a little kick of spicy flavor. This is optional, though!
What to Serve with It
You need to serve this butterscotch steamer with a few cookies! If you’re unsure where to start, these are my top picks.
- Butterscotch Pudding Cookies
- Old-Fashioned Iced Oatmeal Cookies
- Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies
- Chocolate Peppermint Cookies
- Hot Chocolate Cookies
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Make sure the milk is completely hot before removing it from the heat. Past that point, make sure it’s off the heat before you do anything else!
- Make sure your butter is completely melted to avoid getting buttery globs instead of a glorious butterscotch flavor.
- This recipe should be sweet enough, but you can add a small dash of your favorite coffee syrup if you want even more. Vanilla is an excellent choice, but a few flavors clash with the base recipe!
Variations and Substitutions
- If you don’t want to sprinkle cinnamon on top, pumpkin spice can be a delicious alternative during the fall!
- Specialty syrups are your friend here, but you can switch up the flavor with melted chocolate. Otherwise, a drizzle of caramel sauce is an excellent idea for even more butterscotch flavor.
- If you want to add more balance to your butterscotch steamer, a small pinch of salt can dial down the sweetness slightly.
Storage Instructions
You can store this butterscotch steamer in the fridge for a couple of days in a covered mug or airtight container.
To bring it back to life, pop it in the microwave or heat it on the stove until it’s warmed.
Can I Freeze?
I wouldn’t recommend freezing this butterscotch steamer as it’s just so easy to make fresh.
You can put it in individual freezer bags or an airtight container for up to 3 months if you absolutely must.
To keep things safe, let it cool down thoroughly first.
Also, defrost the recipe in the fridge to avoid any bacterial growth!

Can I say I’m OBSESSED! This has totally replaced my morning coffee. I used unsweetened silk almond milk and topped my with pumpkin pie spice instead of cinnamon, and OMG! It’s like fall in a cup. Next time I will try a little whipped cream on top. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. It’s sooooo yummy! If you haven’t tried this, don’t wait. Go for it!
So good. Comfort in a cup. I used lactose free milk and it was amazing!!!
This was much better than I was expecting. I’m pleasantly surprised! I used unsweetened soy milk, and the brown sugar Swerve. I also used Blue Bonnet light. I heated it in the microwave and it worked perfectly. I sprinkled it with a little pumpkin pie spice. This is a nice alternative to coffee and tea. 🙂
Can this be made with non dairy milk
I haven’t tried it, but I’m thinking it would be fine!
Can you save the drink if you don’t drink it all? Like put in the fridge and drink later
You can, but you’ll want to heat it up again and make sure to stir it well.
Easy and tasty, I made a quarter recipe in the microwave, to save doing more dishes. I heated the 1 cup milk, 1/2 tbsp butter in my mug for a minute and a half, then stirred in the 1 tbsp of brown sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon. This was so fast, yet still tasted special. I can see myself making this nightly while reading before bed. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
That sounds so good and quick to make.
Thank you for this tip! It’s just me and microwave for sure!
I think this is my new favorite warm drink!!
This looks so simple to make and looks yummy too. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
