“This is the BEST savory pie ever”, says my boyfriend, Matty. He loved this recipe so much that he ate almost the whole pie himself. I was able to snag a piece and let me tell you, he’s right. It’s delicious!
I’m a big fan of Impossible Pies that gained fame in the 1970s. The original recipe was shared on the back of a box of Bisquick mix. I love making them because they are just so dang easy and I always have great results.

I love the mouthwatering flavor of the beef and cheese. It really does taste like a cheeseburger. So good.

Impossible Cheeseburger Pie Ingredients
You’ll need one pound of lean ground beef for this recipe. If it’s a little more or less, don’t stress.
The only veggie in this recipe is an onion. I like sweet onions especially when they are cooked.
Other ingredients are cheddar cheese, milk, onion soup mix, Bisquick and eggs.

How to Make Impossible Cheeseburger Pie

The first step is to cook the ground beef and onions. Add both ingredients to a large skillet and cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain the grease and then spread the mixture in a 9-inch greased pie pan.
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the meat.
In a bowl, whisk together milk, onion soup mix, Bisquick and eggs. Pour this mixture into the pie pan.
Bake for 25 minutes at 400F. Let cool for a few minutes before cutting into slices to serve. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 cup sweet onion chopped
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp onion soup mix
- ½ cup Bisquick
- 2 large eggs

Made this for dinner, since I have celiac I used Gluten free Bisquick. Also used Laura Scudder’s onion dip packet as it is gf (Lipton’s onion soup mix is not). I used Lactose free 2% milk. I was a bit skeptical. To my amazement it came out great! Didn’t think to take a pic, but looked amazing. Next time I will add some green chili peppers and maybe just one Tbls of onion dip mix. Thank you!

Could you make this in the crockpot? If so low/high? And how long?
Good question! I’ve never made it in the crockpot. If I were, I’d still brown the beef before putting it and cook on LOW heat for 3 to 4 hours. Check it then and see if it needs more time.
I love this recipe I kinda double the bisquik to have a bigger fluffy crust it’s so yummy & i ad taco seasoning to the meat .. my family loves it every time I cook it & try to make it on rainy or very cold winter days the oven warms up the house & the kiddos .. & try not to make this meal too much I want them to love it more each time which they do

Ryan, I remember as a kid one of these types of recipes going around and it was delicious. I ate one time as a kid, and then cooked it one time for my new family 15-yrs ago, and all was well. So sorry your family didn’t have a better repertoire of recipes to make something a bit different. God Bless!

Can I use water or almond milk in substitute of milk in the recipe? (Lactose intolerant, cheese is ok for some reason- cow milk is a MAJOR no go) 🙁
I would use unsweetened almond milk in place of the milk.
Do you think you could use almond flour?
I used Bisquick so I think of you use an alternative to that with almond flour it should work. I found this recipe on this post on what ingredients to use with the almond flour https://www.mashed.com/456779/the-best-substitutes-for-bisquick/
If using almond flour reduce to 1/3 of a cup and increase the eggs to 4…

Can you prepare ahead of time
Yes, you can prepare up to a day ahead and store in the fridge.
Do I have to use bisquick or will any pancake type mix work?
I believe some people have tried pancake mix in its place and it’s worked well.
How would I do the measurements for a 13×9 pan.

I would double it for that size of pan. You will need to increase the cooking time. I would check it at the 25 minute mark and see how much more time it needs.
I used to make this often. This recipe went with our son to college. Great recipe for college kids.
After freezing. What would be the cooking direction ?
I would let it defrost first in the fridge for 24 hours and then bake at 350F for 15 minutes.
To cook right from frozen, bake at 350F for 45 to 55 minutes. Just double check it’s not still frozen when you take it out.
Could you substitute something else for the onion soup
You could try another soup mix like vegetable soup mix. Or simply add in your favourite herbs and spices.

I love trying new recipes and this one worked perfectly with fresh potatoes.
I realized it needed more seasoning in the beef so I added a minced hot pepper Cajun seasoning garlic powder & a little salt. I also added about 4 tbls of ketsup.
It was delicious & enjoyed by my family.

“After spreading the meat/onion in the pie dish, sprinkled All Purpose Seaoning, some Garlic Powder, and some bacon Saesoning.
Then on went the cheese and Bisquick topping mix, which I don’t think soaked down thru the cheese and meat well enough, the bottom broke up a bit while serving, but was deeeeeeeeeeeelish!!
