Caramel Apple Tarts

Three ingredients is all you’ll need to make these mouthwatering Caramel Apple Tarts. Each bite is filled with a buttery, flaky pie crust topped with your favorite sweet apple pie filling and drizzled with addictively sweet caramel sauce.

Yes, three. When you are pressed for time and have to come up with a quick treat, this is your recipe. You’ll need refrigerated pie dough, apple pie filling and caramel sundae sauce.

I could have just left them with only apple filling, but I was craving caramel. I’m one of those people who prefer caramel over chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, I love chocolate, but I adore caramel. Tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way!

Grab some extra napkins because you are in for a gooey, lick your fingers (clean, of course) dessert!

    Ingredients Needed

    • Refrigerated pie dough crust
    • Apple pie filling
    • Caramel syrup

How to Make Caramel Apple Tarts

    • Step One: Preheat the oven to 450F. Roll out your pie dough and cut into 12 3-inch circles. I used a mason jar with a wide top to do mine. You will need to roll the dough scraps to get the 12 circles.
    • Step Two: Press dough circles into a mini tart pan. Poke each tart with a fork.
    • Step Three: Bake for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Note: these bake very fast and burn quickly!
    • Step Four: Remove tart shells from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
    • Step Five: Add 1 teaspoon of caramel syrup to the top of each tart. Add 2 teaspoons of apple pie filling to each tart.
    • Step Six: Drizzle caramel syrup on top and serve.

    What to Serve with Tarts

    Helpful Tips and Tricks

    • You won’t need an entire can of apple pie filling for this recipe. Save it for another recipe or to serve on top of some vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmm. Try making this Apple Slab Pie with any leftover filling! This Apple Magic Dessert is another perfect dessert to whip up with the extra filling you have leftover from these tarts.
    • This recipe is super simple to scale to make more and since you can store them for a few more days or even freeze them for longer, it’s a no-brainer to just make an extra batch or two if you have the supplies on hand.

    Recipe Variations and Substitutions

    • Instead of using store bought caramel sauce or sundae sauce, you can use your own homemade caramel sauce for a really nice sweet touch.
    • A close second to caramel sauce is butterscotch sauce! If you’re out of caramel sauce, you can use butterscotch sauce in its place. If you want, you can make your own butterscotch sauce with this easy recipe.
    • You can make different sized tarts if you want. However, this may require more or less apple pie filling, so choose your tart size wisely.

    Leftover Storage

Leftover caramel apple tarts should be placed in a closed airtight container and kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Because they have perishable ingredients, they need to be refrigerated.

    Can I Freeze This?

Sure thing. You can totally freeze any leftover tarts. We don’t often have any leftovers because everyone always snatches them up. But, if you want to freeze these for later, I suggest flash freezing them just as the tart crust and the apple pie filling. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.

Wait to add the caramel drizzle and any other toppings until you want to eat them. Let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight before eating them later.

How do I make the tart circles?

To make the tart circles from the pie crust dough, I used the opening of a mason jar to make my circles.

If you don’t have a mason jar, a glass would also work. Try and get the circles to as close as possible to the size of your Wilton Mini Tart pan. If you’re a bit under or over, no biggie. Either stretch out the dough or tear some away to make it fit. The filling will hide your mistakes.

Why do I need to poke the tart crust with a fork?

Poking the tart crusts with the fork tines before you bake them may seem silly or unnecessary, but it is totally helpful and necessary.

This helps make sure the pie crust dough doesn’t flatten out as you are baking it.

What else can I add to my tarts?

You can add whatever you want to these bite sized treats. I like to add a little whipped cream. Maybe even flavored whipped cream if I have any.

You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or even caramel ice cream. Or add some other drizzle sauces, chocolate sauce or butterscotch sauce would both be lovely.

Want more ideas? Try some crushed nuts or some fresh berries. So many great options!
