Variations and Substitutions

- Use Homemade Apple Filling: Swap the canned filling for homemade if you have extra time and want a fresher taste.
- Try Different Nuts: Walnuts or sliced almonds work just as well if you’re out of pecans.
- Add Some Cranberries: Toss a handful of dried cranberries into the filling for a tart burst of flavor.
- Make It Gluten-Free: Use a gluten-free cake mix to adapt this dessert for dietary needs.
- Dial Down the Sweetness: Omit the caramel sauce or reduce the amount if you prefer it less sweet.
- Go Nut-Free: Skip the nuts or replace them with oats for a crunchy topping.
- Experiment with Spice: Add ginger or cloves for a slightly different spiced flavor profile.

Storage Instructions
- Room Temperature – Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap or foil and store at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- Refrigerator – For longer storage, place leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days.
- Freezer – Wrap individual portions in plastic wrap, place in a freezer-safe bag or container, and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheating – Warm individual servings in the microwave for about 30 seconds or reheat the entire pan in a 350°F oven until heated.

Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Don’t Skimp on Butter: Make sure to use enough butter to cover the top evenly. It melts into the cake mix, creating that golden, crispy topping. If you don’t use enough, you’ll have dry, powdery spots.
- Choose Your Nuts (or Skip Them!): Pecan halves or pieces add a lovely crunch and nutty flavor, but they’re completely optional. If you’re not a fan of nuts or need a nut-free option, simply leave them out.
- Even Layers Are Key: Spread each ingredient layer as evenly as possible. This ensures the butter melts and bakes everything uniformly, so you get the perfect bite every time.
- Adjust the Sweetness: The caramel sauce adds richness, but you can reduce the amount if you prefer a less sweet dessert.
- Serve It Fresh: While it’s great reheated, this dessert is best served warm out of the oven with your favorite topping.

Hi! Do you have a similar recipe for a pecan pie dump cake? Or any advice on what to swap out here to do so?
No, I don’t but I bet that would be so delicious. I love pecan pie! I did find this recipe that looks similar. It’s made with cake mix as well, but doesn’t have the apples https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/pecan-pie-dump-cobbler/2122fd17-7934-4a5c-a7b2-bff28269e117
Can you add raisons to this recipe?
Yes, I think that would be yummy!
I think mixing the spices into the pie filling might be better to get even taste. Â
What is the “Caramel Sauce” recipe?
I love Dump Cakes! I made this recipe, it turned out great! To those having trouble with dry spots- make sure you put enough butter on top. Sliced thin, space the butter evenly over the top. You may have to use a few slices more than 1 stick. If you still have a dry spot or two put a small piece of butter on them right after you take the cake out of the oven.
I made the Caramel Apple Dump cake this morning for my best friend’s birthday and was absolutely delicious…Simple and easy to make and it makes your house smell like fall…Well make again
Sounds really goodÂ
Can you use fresh apples?
I’d be worried they’d be crunchy! You could make homemade apple pie filling though or cook the apples first and then use them.
This was very easy to put together. I had to use a spice cake mix (couldn’t find butter pecan) and it came out wonderfully. We will do this one again in the fall, it’s 105 here today in DFW.
I would suggest mixing butter into cake mix before adding it to pan to get more even distribution. I ended up with many ‘dry’ spots – ugh!
Did you melt the butter in cake mixÂ
How did you mix the butter with the dry cake mix?
it looks real tasty
Very good – really rich and sweet! Next time I will make my own apple pie filling and will add a sprinkle of sea salt over the caramel to help cut that sweetness as well. I used unsalted butter and will do so again. Thanks for sharing!
I used spice cake mix..it was impressive and delicious. I also melted my butter and drizzled it.
This looks great and can’t wait to try it
Does it make a difference if unsalted butter is used?
It shouldn’t.
What would happen if I added the butter to to the cake mix, and mixed it with a hand mixer? I don’t like those powdery dry cake mix patches. I hate putting that butter on top of the mix, hence my mix patches. I’ve even tried grating it. I have to keep freezing the butter. I have really hot hands, and it melts the butter, so I freeze it frequently.Â
I think that would probably work if you did that. Let me know if you end up trying it and how it turns out.
I have seen recipes that called for melting the butter and pouring it over the dry ingredients. My friend and I tried it and we preferred the butter slices, but you might try it.
I get pie filling at Dollar Tree store (for $1 obviously).
I would rather cook up my own apple filling so how many apples would you say?
I used a Spice cake mix (couldn’t find butter pecan) and used apple pie spice. Delicious!
Unable to find Butter Pecan Cake Mix here in my city. What would be a good substitute?
A yellow cake mix or even a white cake mix should also work fine.
