These Banana Boats are the perfect camping dessert recipe and require NO cleanup! Like s’mores without the graham crackers, these bananas are filled with gooey chocolate and melted marshmallows!
S’mores bring the best memories of childhood campouts, scouting retreats, family singalongs and so many camping moments. These Banana Boats are your new campout dessert or are perfect for throwing on the still-hot grill after dinner!
You stuff a whole banana with chocolate and marshmallows, wrap it in aluminum foil, and cook it over the embers of an open fire. When I’m not camping, I substitute the oven for the fire! The inside is packed with melty chocolate, gooey marshmallows and soft banana you’ll need to eat with a spoon. The banana peel acts as your “bowl” to hold it all together.

I kept wanting to call these Banana S’mores, but they are missing the graham crackers! If that’s your favorite part of the s’mores, add a few pieces once the bananas are cooked to keep the crackers crisp.
- Bananas, ripe and ready to eat but still firm enough to hold its shape
- Chocolate chips
- Mini marshmallows
- Aluminum foil — not edible here, but a must for these treats!

What I used for my Banana Boats
- Aluminum foil: The MOST important thing in this recipe because with bad foil, it could leak everywhere! I use this foil exclusively for all my cooking and baking needs, from the grill to the oven.
How to Make Banana Boats
- Without peeling, slice bananas lengthwise without cutting through the other side, creating a pocket with a little uncut space on each end.
- Then, push sides apart and fill the pocket with chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.
- Next, wrap in aluminum foil, and be careful to keep them all with the cut side facing up!
- If you’re camping, put your wrapped bananas in the fire for about 5 to 10 minutes. If you’re at home, put them in a 300-degree F oven for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until the chocolate and marshmallows have melted. Serve immediately with a spoon.
Get ‘em while they’re hot! I had one left over that I kept in the fridge overnight, and I ended up throwing it away because it looked unappealing. They’re so delicious you likely won’t have leftovers, but one per person is a good rule of thumb here.
What to Add
These Banana Boats are just the starting point of some very amazing campfire desserts!
For this recipe, you can use any kind of chocolate — dark, milk, or white. If you have butterscotch fans, those chips would also work!
Bananas are a great dessert fruit, but so are strawberries. Got both? Bring everyone to the party and add some sliced strawberries to the bananas after cooking.
Looking to make it like a banana split? Add some whipped cream and chopped nuts! A garnish of graham cracker pieces is an amazing add-in here as well.

- 4 bananas
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
- Slice bananas down the center being careful not cut through to the other side.
- Open up carefully and fill with chocolate chips and marshmallows.
