Apple Pie Spice

Whenever fall rolls around, I make a beeline to the kitchen to whip up my favorite apple pie spice. Loaded with classic spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and ginger, it’s a super-comforting blend that works in everything from apple pie to muffins, pancakes, and warm bowls of oatmeal.

It’s incredibly fragrant, and my family always knows when I’ve come home with a bushel of apples as the waft of glorious spices floats through the house.

Trust me, it’s dreamy!

When I couldn’t find apple pie spice at the store one fateful fall evening, I decided to take matters into my own hands. A few years ago, I also added cardamon to the blend, as it has a slight spiciness that you’ll often find in Indian cooking. It gives the blend a depth of flavor that you won’t find anywhere else.

Although I love using this blend for apple pie, it works with virtually any apple-based dessert during the fall. And if you’re creative, you can even use it in a DIY beauty scrub for beautifully exfoliated skin. It’s just that versatile!

If the taste and ease of use weren’t enough to convince you to try this recipe, perhaps the fact that it’s almost a one-step recipe will! All you need to do is measure out your spices, stir them in a small bowl, and place the finished mix in a mason jar in the pantry.

Not only will your mix be fresh and on hand for those last-minute apple pies, but it saves you trawling through the grocery aisles for their elusive apple pie spice. Oh, and it’ll save you tons of money in the long run, too!

    • Cinnamon: The star of the show! It brings that classic cozy sweetness we all love in apple pie.
    • Nutmeg: Adds a warm, nutty twist that makes every bite feel extra comforting.
    • Cardamom: This one’s a bit floral and unique—it brightens up the mix so it’s not too heavy.
    • Allspice: A little peppery and earthy, it adds just the right kick to round out the flavors.
    • Ginger: Brings a gentle zing that keeps things fresh and balances the sweetness.
    • Cloves: Bold and aromatic, cloves add that extra “something” that ties all the spices together.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • You can quickly scale the recipe up or down depending on how much apple pie spice you need. Just adjust the measurements accordingly.
    • Proper sealing of your spice blend is important to keep it fresh. Storing it in a mason jar should help your spices retain their aromatic flavors.
    • Double-check your base spices before adding them to the mix. Overly lumpy spice bottles may have expired and will not give you the perfectly smooth spice mix you’re looking for!

    Variations and Substitutions

    • The spices used in this recipe are pretty classic, but you can leave out the ginger and cardamom if you don’t want the added warmth.
    • Add half a teaspoon of clove to make this spice blend even warmer!
    • If you don’t want to include the cardamom, it’s best to double the allspice measurement.

    Storage Instructions

Store your apple pie spice in airtight mason jars in a cool and dry place. To make it last longer, it’s also best to keep your mixture out of direct sunlight! It should stay safe to eat for up to 2 years, but I doubt it’ll last that long.

    Can I Freeze?

There’s no need to, as it’ll stay fresh in the cupboard!

Remember that your ground spices might lose their flavor over time, so don’t leave them too long before enjoying them.

I really appreciate you posting this Apple Pie Spice recipe. I have saved it and written it down. How much should one use? Thank you again.

      1. Depends on the recipe! I usually use about a teaspoon.

    3. I wondered what the difference was between this and pumpkin pie spice. I just subbed pumpkin pie spice for it in a recipe recently.
