How to Make Bisquick Sausage Balls
- Step One: Mix the breakfast sausage, Bisquick mix, garlic powder, milk, and cheddar cheese in a large mixing bowl.
- Step Two: Using a cookie scoop (I used a medium OXO Good Grip cookie scoop which is 1 ½ tablespoons), scoop the dough into balls. Roll them in your hands and put them on a plate.
- Step Three: Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper and place balls in the air fryer leaving enough space in between so it can cook evenly. (For the Ninja Foodi 14-1 basket, I place 7, and for the Cosori, I put nine balls per cook)
- Step Four: Cook in the air fryer on a manual setting. Ninja Foodi 14 in 1 temperature 360F for 8-10 minutes. Cosori Air Fryer temperature 370F for 8-9 minutes. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
- Step Five: Once they are cooked, carefully take them out of the Air Fryer basket and place them on a cooling rack.
- Step Six: Serve and Enjoy!

What to Serve with Bisquick Sausage Balls
There are several delicious recipes that you can serve alongside these Bisquick sausage balls.
Variations and Substitutions
- Spicy Variations: If you prefer a little heat added to your recipes, you can easily swap the regular breakfast sausage for a spicer version. Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the sausage mixture to add some heat. You can even use a hot sausage variety to up the spice level.
- Cheese Variations: While this recipe calls for mild cheddar cheese, you can easily use different varieties. Add Pepper Jack for spice, mozzarella for a creamy bite, or even Swiss for a bolder flavor. You can even use sharp cheddar cheese for a more pronounced cheddar bite.
- Seasoning Variations: Experiment with different seasonings to enhance the flavors of this recipe. Try Italian seasoning, cayenne, or any dried seasoning you prefer. You can add fresh herbs like chives, parsley, or thyme to bring additional depth to the sausage balls.
- Vegetarian Substitution: Substitute the breakfast sausage with a plant-based alternative. Plant-based sausage crumbles work perfectly in place of the breakfast sausage.
- Meat Variations: While breakfast sausage is the classic choice, you can easily experiment with other types of meat. Ground turkey sausage, chicken, or beef will all work in this recipe.
Storage Instructions
It is doubtful that you will have leftovers from this delicious recipe. However, if you make these ahead or have a few leftovers, you can easily store them in the fridge. Allow them to cool thoroughly, then place them in an airtight container. They can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days.
Can I Freeze?
Yes. These can be frozen and enjoyed later. Arrange your cooled sausage balls on a cookie sheet in a single layer, leaving space between them. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for a few hours until it becomes frozen solid. Once they are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag. They can be stored in your freezer for up to 3 months.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Don’t Overmix: When combining your ingredients, avoid overmixing them. Overmixing can cause your sausage balls to lose their fluffy texture.
- Use Fresh Shredded Cheese: Shredding your cheese at home is a good idea for the best results. Freshly shredded cheese melts better, creating a creamier texture than store-bought pre-shredded cheese.
- Make them Even: When forming your sausage balls, it is essential to maintain a uniform size. This will make sure that they cook evenly.
- Space them Properly: You want to leave enough space between the sausage balls when you place them in the air fryer basket. This allows for circulation and even cooking. Crowding the baskets can cause your sausage balls to be unevenly cooked without getting that crispy exterior.
- Double the Recipe: If you are hosting a large gathering or meal prepping, double the recipe. They store well, and you can quickly freeze them for future meals.
