If you are looking for a beans recipe with amazing flavor, then look no further. This Dr Pepper Baked Beans recipe is a great side dish with a secret ingredient that makes it so much better. Well, it’s not really a secret since it’s in the recipe name, but seriously, try adding Dr. Pepper to your next batch of beans. You can thank me later.

I’m already a Dr Pepper fan and love drinking it cold with a little bit of ice. As it turns out, it pairs beautifully with beans to make a family favorite recipe. Serve this delicious side dish whenever you’re craving easy comfort food.

It’s super easy to make in the oven, but will need a little extra time for baking. You have to let all the ingredients work their magic and it’s so worth it in the end.

How to Make Dr. Pepper Baked Beans

  • Step One: Preheat oven to 350°F. 
  • Step Two: In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Stir gently until mixed well.
  • Step Three: Pour into large oven proof skillet or 9×13 inch baking dish.
  • Step Four: Bake for up to 2 hours. Remove from oven and serve.

    The length of baking time depends on how you like your beans. If you like thick and stickier beans, then bake for 2 or more hours. If you like saucy beans, then bake for 1.5 hours.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Use any brand and/or variety of pork and beans. You can change up the flavor depending on what you use.
    • Use 1 teaspoon of dry mustard powder in place of the yellow mustard.
    • Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of tomato paste to give it a more tomato-y taste.
    • Kick up the heat with the addition of 1 tablespoon of chili powder.
    • No Dr. Pepper? Use Coca-Cola or Pepsi instead.

    Storage Instructions

    Store any leftover baked beans in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    Baked beans also freeze very well. Let the beans come to room temperature first and then store in freezer safe containers for up to 6 months.

    How to Make in the Slow Cooker

    Add all the ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 hours. Easy peasy!

    Can I Use Diet Dr. Pepper?

    I use regular Dr. Pepper, but you should be fine using diet Dr. Pepper if you prefer.

    What Kind of Beans Should I Use?

    Any brand of beans should work. I use canned pork and beans, but you could also use navy beans, white beans, great northern beans, pinto beans. Use up those cans of beans in your pantry!

    • 4 cans pork and beans (28oz cans)
    • 12 slices cooked bacon chopped
    • ½ yellow onion diced
    • ½ green pepper diced
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • ½ cup BBQ sauce
    • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 ½ cups Dr. Pepper
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • Parsley or green onion for garnish (optional)
