    Variations and Substitutions

    • Add Nuts: Roll the no-bake cookie dough truffles in finely chopped nuts after coating them in chocolate. Almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts can add a delicious crunch and flavor to your truffles.
    • Add Cookies: Mix crushed cookies or even graham crackers into the cookie dough. This will add a fun texture and flavor to your cookie dough truffles.
    • Peanut Butter: Add peanut butter chips into the cookie dough or drizzle melted peanut butter over the chocolate-coated truffles. Adding peanut butter will create a deep and delicious flavor to your edible cookie dough truffles.
    • Dark Chocolate: Use dark chocolate chips in the edible cookie dough center. This will create a rich and deep chocolate flavor for your truffles.
    • White Chocolate Variation: Melt white chocolate chips instead of semisweet chocolate to coat the cookie dough bites. This will change the flavor of your truffles. You could even do half and half to create two separate flavor experiences in one batch.
    • Sprinkle with Sea Salt: Sprinkle these delicious chocolate morsels with a bit of sea salt after dipping them. It will create a yummy, sweet, and salty contrast to the truffles.

    Storage Instructions

If you have leftovers of these chocolate chip cookie dough truffles or want to make them ahead, they are easy to store. Place your chilled truffles into an airtight container and store them in the fridge. They will keep well for 5-7 days.

    Can I Freeze?

Yes. If you want to extend the life of these easy cookie dough truffles, you can freeze them. Make sure to allow them to chill properly first, though. Once chilled, place them in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. They can be stored for up to a month.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure the butter is truly at room temperature. Room-temperature butter is easily blendable and better incorporated into the other ingredients. Making sure that your butter is at room temperature before making these truffles will ensure they have a smooth center.
    • Heat-Treated Flour: Microwaving the raw flour is vital to eliminate any potential bacteria. Be sure it reaches 160℉ for safety. Allow it to cool before incorporating it into the dough.
    • Adjust Dough Consistency: If the cookie dough is too dry, gradually add small amounts of heavy cream or milk until it reaches a consistency that sticks together without being overly wet. You don’t want your dough to be too dry.
    • Chill the Dough: Chilling the rolled dough balls in the freezer for 15 minutes before dipping them in chocolate helps them hold their shape and makes coating them in chocolate easier. This will help ensure that the chocolate sticks without compromising the integrity of the cookie dough.
    • Melting Chocolate: Melt the chocolate chips at 50% power in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds. This helps prevent overheating and ensures a smooth, glossy chocolate coating. If you overheat your chocolate, it will become stiff and difficult to work with when you try to dip cookie balls into it.
    • Get Creative with Decorations: Feel free to decorate the truffles however you wish. Sprinkle additional chocolate or colored sprinkles, or drizzle a different kind of chocolate over the truffles to make them even prettier.

Is it Safe to Eat Raw Cookie Dough?

While the temptation of raw cookie dough is undeniable, some potential risks are worth noting. Raw or undercooked eggs may harbor Salmonella, and untreated flour can carry E. coli.

To play it on the safe side and still indulge your sweet tooth, consider using pasteurized eggs, heat-treating the flour, or exploring egg substitutes. The risks are relatively low, but caution goes a long way, especially in a vulnerable group. You can enjoy a delicious edible cookie dough recipe without worrying with a few tweaks and thoughtful choices.

    How to Heat-Treat Flour

    • Step One: Measure the flour needed for your recipe and place it in a microwave-safe bowl.
    • Step Two: Microwave the flour on high for 30 seconds.
    • Step Three: After 30 seconds, stir the flour thoroughly to ensure even heating.
    • Step Four: Use a food thermometer to check the temperature of the flour. It must reach at least 160℉ to kill bacteria effectively.
    • Step Five: If the desired temperature is not reached, continue microwaving in 15-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the thermometer reads 160℉.
    • Step Six: Once the flour reaches the desired temperature, allow it to cool before using it in your recipe. This prevents the heat-treated flour from affecting the consistency of the recipe.
