Chocolate Waffles

Chocolate Waffles are the perfect decadent breakfast made with basic ingredients. Rich chocolate waffles are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Topped with a luscious Nutella cream cheese topping and fresh berries for a sweet way to start your day.

You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy a batch of decadent chocolate waffles. However, they would make an excellent Valentine’s day breakfast! Homemade waffles for the chocolate lover. Perfection!

This easy breakfast is packed with sweet chocolate flavor. Chocolate waffles are a little more acceptable to eat for breakfast than chocolate cake (Been there, done that!). Eat them plain or smother them with your favorite toppings. I personally love a drizzle of chocolate syrup on mine.

This chocolate waffles recipe is easy to make with a waffle maker. Make this special treat for birthdays, holidays or just because. Waffles are always a breakfast favorite in my home!

How to Make Chocolate Waffles

  • Step One: Add flour, cocoa powder, sugar and baking powder to a large bowl. Whisk together and make a well in the middle.

  • Step Two: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together milk, eggs and oil.

  • Step Three: Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring constantly as you go.

  • Step Four: Pour ¼ of the pancake batter into the waffle maker.
  • Step Five: Cook until crisp on the outside, about 4 to 5 minutes, depending on your waffle maker.
  • Step Six: Transfer the waffles to a serving dish and keep warm while you make the topping.

How to Make the Nutella Topping

  • Step One: Mix together the cream cheese and Nutella until fully combined.
  • Step Two: Spread the Nutella topping on the warm waffles. Top with fresh fruit and dust with powdered sugar.

    What to Serve with Chocolate Waffles

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Add chocolate chips in the batter to make double chocolate waffles.
    • Add a couple tablespoons of peanut butter to the batter to make peanut butter chocolate waffles.
    • Use dark chocolate cocoa powder for a dark chocolate waffles.
    • Swap out the white sugar for brown sugar.

    Storage Instructions

    Store leftover waffles in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Make sure they’ve cooled completely first though.

    Can I Freeze?

    Yes, these chocolate waffles are great to freeze! I recommend cooking them and letting them come to room temperature.  Then place the waffles on a large baking sheet in a single layer and put in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours. 

    Once they’ve hardened up in the freezer, stack them in a freezer bag. Place a piece of parchment paper between each waffle so they don’t stick together. Freeze for up to 3 months.

    Instead of the Nutella cream cheese topping, you could try these toppings:

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Depending on the type of waffle maker you own, you may need to grease the plates with a little oil or spray on some non-stick spray before adding the waffle batter.
    • I found 4 minutes to be the optimum time for a crispy outside and fluffy inside. Your results may vary slightly depending on your waffle maker. Monitor the first batch to see how long it takes for your particular waffle maker.
    • Keep the waffles warm while you cook by placing them in a 200F on a wire rack over a baking sheet. This will keep them warm and prevent them from getting soggy. You can also keep them warm in a toaster oven.

    Can I Make Without Cocoa Powder?

    Yes, you can make these traditional waffles if you prefer. Leave out the cocoa powder and add in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Cooking time should be the same.

    Can I Use Gluten Free Flour?

    Yes! Substitute 1:1 gluten free flour for all-purpose flour if you like. 

    You can also try other types of flours like whole wheat flour or even cake flour. Experiment and see what you like!

    Ingredients
     
     

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 4 tbsp natural unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 4 tbsp sugar
    • 2 tsp baking powder
    • 1 ½ cups milk
    • 3 eggs
    • 8 tsp vegetable oil

    Nutella Topping

    • 4 tbsp cream cheese softened
    • 4 tbsp Nutella
