How to Make Chocolate Waffles

Variations and Substitutions
- Add chocolate chips in the batter to make double chocolate waffles.
- Add a couple tablespoons of peanut butter to the batter to make peanut butter chocolate waffles.
- Use dark chocolate cocoa powder for a dark chocolate waffles.
- Swap out the white sugar for brown sugar.
Store leftover waffles in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Make sure they’ve cooled completely first though.
Can I Freeze?
Yes, these chocolate waffles are great to freeze! I recommend cooking them and letting them come to room temperature. Then place the waffles on a large baking sheet in a single layer and put in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours.
Once they’ve hardened up in the freezer, stack them in a freezer bag. Place a piece of parchment paper between each waffle so they don’t stick together. Freeze for up to 3 months.

- I found 4 minutes to be the optimum time for a crispy outside and fluffy inside. Your results may vary slightly depending on your waffle maker. Monitor the first batch to see how long it takes for your particular waffle maker.
- Keep the waffles warm while you cook by placing them in a 200F on a wire rack over a baking sheet. This will keep them warm and prevent them from getting soggy. You can also keep them warm in a toaster oven.
Can I Make Without Cocoa Powder?
Yes, you can make these traditional waffles if you prefer. Leave out the cocoa powder and add in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Cooking time should be the same.
Can I Use Gluten Free Flour?
Yes! Substitute 1:1 gluten free flour for all-purpose flour if you like.
You can also try other types of flours like whole wheat flour or even cake flour. Experiment and see what you like!
