    What to Serve with Them

    • Coffee or Hot Chocolate: These haystack’s creamy, rich flavors pair perfectly with a warm cup of coffee or hot cocoa. Add a dollop of whipped cream to your drink for extra indulgence.
    • Ice Cream: Crumble haystacks over vanilla or chocolate ice cream for a crunchy, chocolatey topping.
    • Salty Snacks: Pair them with pretzels, popcorn, or a bowl of mixed nuts to balance the sweetness with a little saltiness.
    • Holiday Treats: Add them to a dessert tray with cookies, fudge, or other festive goodies for an impressive party platter.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Nut-Free Version: Skip the peanuts and replace them with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or additional chow mein noodles for extra crunch without the nuts.
    • Dark Chocolate Twist: Swap the milk chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips if you prefer a richer, slightly less sweet flavor.
    • White Chocolate Drizzle: Once the haystacks are set, drizzle melted white chocolate on top for a decorative and delicious touch.
    • Add Mini Marshmallows: Toss a handful of mini marshmallows for a gooey, chewy texture mixed with the crunch.
    • Festive Sprinkles: Add seasonal sprinkles for holidays or special occasions to give the haystacks a colorful, festive vibe.
    • Swap the Noodles: If you can’t find chow mein noodles, pretzel sticks broken into smaller pieces make a great alternative.
    • Add Dried Fruit: Mix in dried cranberries, raisins, or chopped dried apricots for a pop of natural sweetness.
    • Make Them Gluten-Free: Double-check that your chow mein noodles are gluten-free, or use gluten-free pretzels as a substitute.

    Storage Instructions

    • At Room Temperature: Keep your haystacks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the chocolate from melting.
    • In the Refrigerator: If you prefer a firmer texture or live in a warmer climate, store the haystacks in an airtight container in the fridge. They’ll stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks.
    • In the Freezer: For longer storage, freeze the haystacks in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They’ll last up to 3 months. Let them thaw at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Melt Slowly: When melting the chocolate and peanut butter chips, use medium heat and stir frequently to prevent scorching. You can also melt them in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
    • Work Quickly: Once the chocolate mixture is melted, immediately mix the peanuts and chow mein noodles. The mixture will start to firm up as it cools, so it’s best to portion it out quickly.
    • Use Wax Paper or Parchment: Always drop your haystacks onto wax or parchment paper to prevent sticking. This makes cleanup a breeze, too!
    • Customize the Size: Use a tablespoon for bite-sized haystacks or a cookie scoop if you prefer larger ones. Adjust the portion size to suit your preference.
    • Don’t Overload the Noodles: Start with 2 cups of chow mein noodles and mix well before deciding if you need more. Adding too many noodles can make the haystacks harder to hold together.
    • Let Them Set Fully: Be patient and allow the haystacks to set completely at room temperature for the best texture. If you’re in a hurry, pop them in the fridge for faster setting.
    • Make Ahead: These haystacks store beautifully, so feel free to make them a day or two ahead of when you need them.

      Stacie,ย
I used LaChoy Chow Mein Noodles and I am fairly certain you did too. ย I made mine in the 1970โ€™s and 1980โ€™s. ย I used butterscotch chips and peanuts with the skins on them.

      1. Yes it is LaChoy Chow Mein noodles. I would make the same Butterscotch Haystacks for my Kindergarten class when we would begin memorizing Little Boy Blue for our Language, Reading .

      I need to make these!!

    6. Hey these are great I’ve made them several times and sometimes I add coconut or a different nut. You can still get the noodles in a can I think they are called rice noodles and they are smaller than than the ones in the bag……some Wal-Marts have them…I like them better than the big ones in the bag. I’ve also added butterscotch chips to it too……

      1. Gaila Chapel says:

We make them with butterscotch chips (instead of peanut butter) and cashews. YUM!!!!ย
        I like them either way!
One time Santa left part of one on the mantle, ever since they’ve been called Reindeer Dump at our house!! ย Lol

Do you use salted peanuts,or raw ?

      1. I think I used salted because that’s what I had on hand. Either one would work.

    11. I have used mixed nuts and butterscotch chips instead of the peanut butter/nuts.
Love the pretzel idea … I’m getting to make a whole bunch of these for a cookie type exchange !

    12. This may sound like a dumb question but what kind of peanuts did you use? Raw, dry roasted, party peanuts?

      1. I used regular salted peanuts. I think any type of peanuts you choose should be fine though!

    13. Salted or unsalted peanuts?

      1. I like salted personally, but either one would work. Just whatever one you prefer!

    14. Easy and delicious… sounds like my cup of tea! Or stack of hay, I should say! These would be a fun addition to the Holiday Cookie baking portfolio, too!
