What to Serve with Slow Cooker Dill Pickle Soup

Serve this “dillicious” dill pickle soup recipe alongside some of your favorite side dishes.

    Variations and Substitutions

    • Creamy Base Variations: You can replace the milk and sour cream with rich, heavy cream for a lusciously creamy texture. This will add an indulgent element to the soup, making it even more satisfying and indulgent.
    • Vegetable Varieties: Experiment with vegetables by incorporating alternatives like sweet corn, vibrant peas, or colorful bell peppers. Adding these veggies to the soup can bring a delightful burst of color, flavor, and variety to an already delicious dish.
    • Add Protein: Elevate the heartiness of the soup by adding some protein. Things like cooked chicken, shredded beef, or slices of smoked sausage can add delicious depth of flavor and nutrition to the soup.
    • Make it Smoky: Infuse some smoky elements into the soup by incorporating ingredients like smoked paprika or a hint of smoked cheese. This smokiness will provide a deep contrast to the tanginess of the dill pickles, adding complexity to the soup.
    • Pickle Variations: Embrace the versatility of pickles by experimenting with different types, such as bread-and-butter pickles or even spicy varieties. These unique pickle choices will introduce diverse flavor profiles, allowing you to tailor the soup to your taste. You can even mix and match the pickles you choose to use.
    • Potato Variations: Feel free to swap the baby potatoes with alternatives like russet potatoes or buttery Yukon gold potatoes. Just make sure that you adjust the cooking time accordingly.
    • Dairy-Free Choices: Cater to dairy-free requirements by choosing lactose-free milk and sourcing dairy-free sour cream alternatives. These swaps will uphold the soup’s creamy texture while aligning with any specific dietary needs of those enjoying it.
    • Heat Variation: If you’re a fan of spicy food, bring some heat to the soup with a dash of hot sauce, jalapenos, spicy pickles, or a sprinkling of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper. This infusion of heat will add a dynamic kick to the base of the soup.

    Storage Instructions

If you want to prepare this soup ahead of time or happen to have leftover soup (which is unlikely), it does store well. Allow your soup to cool fully, then transfer it to an airtight container. Seal the container tightly and place it in the fridge for 3-4 days.

    Can I Freeze?

Yes. This delicious, hearty soup can be frozen for later enjoyment. Allow your soup to cool and transfer to an airtight, freezer-safe container. Remember to leave some space at the top of the container to allow the soup to expand when it freezes. This creamy soup can be stored in the freezer for 2-3 months.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Cheese Garnish: Enhance the flavor profile by grating a touch of your favorite cheese over the soup. The melted cheese will add an irresistible savory note that complements the pickle tang.
    • Add Crunch: Elevate the soup’s textural appeal by topping it with crushed crackers or homemade croutons. Adding a crunchy garnish provides a satisfying texture that contrasts beautifully with the creamy base.
    • Other Garnish Options: Consider garnishing your soup with fresh dill, chopped pickles or green onions, a dollop of sour cream, or even parsley. Garnishing your soup will add delicious texture and crunch to the dish.
    • Layer Ingredients: Layer the tougher vegetables at the bottom of the slow cooker and the more delicate ones at the top. This will ensure that the soup cooks evenly.
    • Add Extra Brine: Add some extra dill pickle brine to make the pickle flavor stand out even more. Just make sure to thicken your soup if it becomes too watery.
    • Get Creative with Serving: You can serve this flavorful soup in several ways. Put it into small bowls, serve it family style or even choose to enjoy it in a bread bowl. This soup is a pickle lover’s dream.
