I’ve been a sucker for Butter Tarts for a long time….35+ years! I remember my mom buying a pack of Butter Tarts for the family to enjoy. I snuck the box down to my bedroom and ate them all. I hid the empty box so my mom wouldn’t find them. She did find them, of course, and boy, did I get in trouble!

But really, Mom, it’s Butter Tarts! Who can resist this decadence?

These Butter Tart Squares are just like a Butter Tart, but a little easier to make, in my opinion. You don’t have to deal with making each individual crust.

The crust is buttery and yummy, but the best part is the filling. Hands down. I could live on that stuff.

And they are homemade, too. I love a good grocery store Butter Tart, but the homemade version? Much better.

Matty, my fiancé, said they tasted like they were from a bakery. He devoured more than his fair share.

Butter Tart Squares Ingredients

The crust consists of three ingredients:

  • Butter
  • Powdered sugar (Or as we call it in Canada, “icing sugar”)
  • All-purpose flour

The filling a.k.a. the best part includes:

  • Brown sugar
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • White vinegar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Pecans (optional)

You may be wondering after reading the ingredients, why vinegar? No, you won’t taste it at all. It’s a part of the chemical reaction when baking to give it a better flavor and consistency.

How to Make Butter Tart Squares

You’ll have these bad boys made from start to finish in under an hour!

Start by preheating the oven to 350F. Grease a 9 inch square baking pan.

In a large bowl, combine butter, powdered sugar and flour. Press into the baking pan. Bake for 5 minutes.

In another large bowl, stir together brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, vinegar, vanilla extract and pecans. Pour over the crust.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until the top is golden. Let cool before cutting into squares.

Substitutions

Don’t like pecans? Leave ’em out! Easy peasy.

You could also substitute instead:

  • Raisins
  • Chocolate chips
  • Walnuts

How to Store Butter Tart Squares

Butter Tart Squares will keep longer if you store them in a covered container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Crust

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup flour

Filling

  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped

Instructions
