- Step One: In a small saucepan, brown butter, and then add it to a heat-safe bowl. Add the 2 additional tablespoons of butter and whisk until melted.
- Step Two: Add sugar and brown sugar to the melted butter, whisking until fully incorporated. Add eggs and whisk again until incorporated, and sugar is not granulated.
- Step Three: In a medium bowl, add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk the dry ingredients together. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and let it set for about 5 minutes to allow the batter to absorb the flour.
- Step Four: While the batter is sitting, chop up Butterfingers into smallish pieces.
- Step Five: Check the batter to see if it will hold its shape when spooned into a ball. If it doesn’t hold its shape, add a little more flour, about 1/4 cup at a time. When the cookie ball is set, fold in the Butterfinger pieces.
- Step Six: Refrigerate the batter for 15-30 minutes. While the batter is chilling, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare cookie pans with parchment paper.
- Step Seven: For a large-sized cookie, scoop with an ice cream scoop, or scoop with a cookie scoop for average-sized cookies. Place cookies on a baking sheet.
- Step Eight: Bake cookies for 11-14 minutes for larger size or 10-12 minutes for average size.

Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Gather Ingredients: Prior to baking your cookies, prepare all your ingredients and equipment. This will make the preparation and baking process a lot easier.
- Use Room Temp Ingredients: Using room temperature ingredients results in a more consistent cookie texture. This is because the ingredients can be incorporated better when they aren’t cold.
- Scoop and Press: If you are using an ice cream scoop to place your dough on the cookie sheet, you want to pay attention to size. It is a good idea to press the ball of dough down slightly before baking. This will ensure consistent thickness and proper bake time.
- Monitor Baking: To ensure that your cookies are baked to perfection, you will want to monitor them as they bake. For larger cookies, bake for 11-14 minutes, and for average-sized ones, bake for 10-12 minutes. No matter the size, you are looking for a golden-brown exterior and a soft chewy interior.
What’s Inside a Butterfinger?
The Butterfinger candy bars have a history dating back to the 1920s. Featuring a crunchy peanut butter layer enveloped in chocolate, these bars achieve their distinctive texture with a crispy orange-colored filling. This unique filling is crafted by blending roasted peanuts with creamy peanut butter.
Do I have to use Butterfingers?
While these cookies wouldn’t be Butterfinger cookies without the Butterfingers themselves, you can opt to forgo the candy bar. If you can’t find the full-sized, or fun-sized candy bars, look for Butterfinger bits. They are perfect for baking.
How to Brown Butter
To brown the butter, place it in a small saucepan and turn the heat to low/medium. Let the butter bubble and foam. When it appears to be done foaming, watch for the color of the center of the butter to turn a deep golden brown. Once this has happened, your brown butter is ready.
How to Keep Cookies from Spreading Too Much
- Chill the Dough: Chilling the cookie dough is recommended, especially if the dough is wet, sticky, or greasy. This will prevent your cookies from spreading during the baking process, resulting in thicker, sturdier cookies. You can chill the dough overnight for optimal results.
- Line your Baking Sheet: You can use a silicone mat or parchment paper to line your baking sheet. Doing this rather than coating your baking sheet with butter or non-stick spray can help prevent your cookies from spreading out too much.
- Never use Warm Baking Sheets: If your baking sheets are not cool, it can cause your cookies to spread. Never place your cookie dough balls onto a hot baking sheet. Keeping them at room temperature is ideal.
