Headache Balm

My Headache Helper post has been super popular so I wanted to make another DIY essential oil recipe for headaches. This time I’m using a regular coconut oil base. You might already have coconut oil in your pantry. If not, your grocery store should have some jars. I use it in a lot of DIY Beauty recipes and also in cooking. My aunt eats it on toast. Apparently, it’s really good, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I digress…

This Headache Balm is really easy to make and has three essential oils that I find help my headaches. If it’s a really bad headache, it takes the edge off the pain and helps me to function. When I get headaches, they tend to be bad ones.

    Besides the coconut oil, you’ll peppermint essential oil, Frankincense essential oil and lavender essential oil. Peppermint essential oil is the star and is used in a lot of headache formulas. Lavender is known to calm and soothe while Frankincense promotes relaxation.

    Headache Balm - Help soothe a headache with this simple DIY made with coconut oil, peppermint, lavender and frankincense essential oils.

    Basically all you need to do is melted the coconut oil and stir in the essential oils. Wait for it to harden up so it’s not a liquid and rub on your sore temples or the back of your neck. Be careful to not get any in your eyes.

    I bought little tins to put them in and made a label from my Brother P-Touch Label Maker. You could put it a little jar or whatever you have at home. Store it at room temperature.

    You may be tempted to put it in the fridge. I tried that and it was too hard to use. Room temperature is best so it’s soft and easy to apply.

    Headaches suck and I’m always looking for easy ways to take the pain down a notch or two.

    Ingredients
      

    • ¼ cup coconut oil
    • 20 drops of peppermint essential oil
    • 12 drops of lavender essential oil
    • 10 drops of Frankincense essential oil

    Instructions

    • Melt coconut oil in a double boiler over medium heat.
    • Remove from heat and stir in essential oils.
    • Pour into a container.
    • Let sit for an hour to cool before covering.

    1. What could you use as a substitute for the coconut oil? Beeswax or shea butter, maybe?

    2. Thanks for the great recipe. Mine too turned into liquid after sitting on the counter. 

    3. Love this idea. Tried it and it smells wonderful, however, it won’t go back to a solid form. At room temp it’s still a liquid, so I couldn’t put it in my purse to take with me. Any suggestions?

      1. Try putting it in the fridge for a few hours. It should harden then.

        1. Thanks for the reply Stacie, but i’m still in a pickle. I did keep it in the fridge right away but if I take it out for more than an hour it melts again, negating the ability to take it on the go. Am I doing something wrong?

          1. That’s weird! It stays hard for me. Is it really humid and hot where you live?

            1. Nope. (That actually made me laugh out loud.) I live in North Dakota. It’s 18° outside and we’re all like “It’s so nice today!”.

              I guess, i’ll just keep this stuff at home in the fridge or maybe poor it into a roller dispenser. Thanks for your help!

      2. The same thing happened to me. I added 1 1/2 Tbs of Bees Wax to help make it solid.

        1. I was wondering if it would be okay to subsitute beeswax for the coconut oil. I would love to keep some in my purse, but the coconut oil will melt.

    5. Hi, if the coconut oil is already liquid (it’s very hot here..) do I still need to heat it up before adding the other oils or does the cooking help the process to combine everything? Thank you

      1. If it’s already in a liquid state, you won’t need to heat it up again. I have to because mine is usually solid.

    6. I use either a blend similar to this or straight peppermint oil  under my nose. I get migraine headaches, the kind that I only wake up to throw up!!  I do a comfortable sit up position and deep breathe in through the nose for a count of 8 and out thru mouth for a count of 10 and sometimes that’s all it takes. About 15 minutes it could be gone. Learned this trick about 15 years ago. Have a whole arsenal of tricks for these stupid 40+ years once a week life altering things but this is one that works sometimes. I’m making this up!! Thanks. 

    7. Would there be the same effect with out the frank essential oil?

      1. The most important one is the peppermint. You could omit the frankincense. I use it because it helps with relaxation.

      2. I substituted peppermint, lavender and ylang ylang in mine since I didn’t have frankincense.

    8. I added exulyptus and it works great for a sinus headache.

    9. I get a lot of headaches so as soon as I feel one coming on I use one of the paper dust mask and put one drop of peppermint oil on it and wear it off and on through out the day until I don’t need it anymore. I haven’t had to take Aleve in over 2 weeks now. You have to catch your headache as soon as it starts or it will just ease the pain some.

    10. I get a lot of headaches and chronic migraine. I definitely need to make this!

      I have heard of these essential oils helping with headaches. I get headaches sometimes and they are tension headaches. I need to make this headache balm to get rid of them!
