Headache Balm

My Headache Helper post has been super popular so I wanted to make another DIY essential oil recipe for headaches. This time I’m using a regular coconut oil base. You might already have coconut oil in your pantry. If not, your grocery store should have some jars. I use it in a lot of DIY Beauty recipes and also in cooking. My aunt eats it on toast. Apparently, it’s really good, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I digress…

This Headache Balm is really easy to make and has three essential oils that I find help my headaches. If it’s a really bad headache, it takes the edge off the pain and helps me to function. When I get headaches, they tend to be bad ones.

Besides the coconut oil, you’ll peppermint essential oil, Frankincense essential oil and lavender essential oil. Peppermint essential oil is the star and is used in a lot of headache formulas. Lavender is known to calm and soothe while Frankincense promotes relaxation.

Basically all you need to do is melted the coconut oil and stir in the essential oils. Wait for it to harden up so it’s not a liquid and rub on your sore temples or the back of your neck. Be careful to not get any in your eyes.

I bought little tins to put them in and made a label from my Brother P-Touch Label Maker. You could put it a little jar or whatever you have at home. Store it at room temperature.

You may be tempted to put it in the fridge. I tried that and it was too hard to use. Room temperature is best so it’s soft and easy to apply.

Headaches suck and I’m always looking for easy ways to take the pain down a notch or two.

    1. 5 stars
I haven’t used this yet but I’m looking forward to using it. I get severe migraines and I’m hoping this gives me relief. Thank you for the recipe.

    2. Jojoba or agave would also be a good su substitute for tree nut oils.

    3. I’d like to make this for my daughter but she’s allergic to coconut (or any tree nut). Is there a substitute for the coconut oil that you can suggest?

      1. You could try avocado oil or olive oil, but it might not solidify the same way as the coconut oil will. It will still be a good carrier oil though for the essential oils.

Thank you for sharing the recipe.

    5. How much does this recipe make if using 4oz container?

    6. I HAVE TRY ON ROLLER WITH THIS RECIPE THAT TURNS UP WELL. THANKS.

    7. How long will a batch of this last? Does it have an “expiration date?”

      1. It should be fine for at least 3 to 4 months or more.

      Dear Stacie,

I have been using and recommending essential oils for the past 24 years long before their huge surge in popularity, so I consider myself a veteran. I am in the process of creating the fantastic recipie you were kind enough to submit. You’re going to laugh(I hope) but when I read your profile it said that you love coffee. I am 48 and have just begun drinking coffee over the last year. My dilemma is that I love the powdered Carnation creamer just a little too much! I have been searching the web for the “knock off” or secret recipie to create at home. After purchasing all of the ingredients and trying several recipies that claim to taste just like the original, all I have ended up with is coconut flavored powdered milk. Help!!!!!

      1. Eek! I’m not sure of any unfortunately! Sorry I’m not much help.

    9. Dale Parkinson says:

I would like to try this balm for my granddaughter as she is a teen who gets migraines. I do not have frankincense do you know if it is an absolute ingredient or could I make it without it or could I substitute with tea tree sweet orange or eucalyptus as I do have them on hand? I would appreciate your consideration thank you. Dale

      1. Just leave out the frankincense. The most important one is the peppermint.

    10. Would this have the same effects if it was just peppermint and lavender?

      1. Peppermint is the most important one so you should be fine. The other two just are for support.

    11. Mine is still not getting solid

    12. I suffer really bad for headaches & Miagrains ,, I am medicated morning n night so I can control the pain – very interested in trying this??? Thanks for posting; ( on my to do list)

    13. Does this balm absorb into the skin quickly or will it be “goopy” on your skin? I guess I’m wondering if you can use it at work without looking like you have lard on your forehead.

      1. Don’t use too much of it and rub it in well and you should be fine!
