Instructions
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are soft, golden, and caramelized, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Remove from heat and let the onions cool completely.
In a bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Fold in the cooled onions until well combined.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors develop.
Sprinkle with chives before serving.
Notes
Serve with classic potato chips, crackers, or fresh veggies like carrots and celery.
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir before serving.
