October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a very personal topic for me and my family and I will be sharing my personal story with Simply Stacie readers throughout the month in the hopes that perhaps it can help other women. I have lost many of our family members to cancer, particularly breast and ovarian cancer. In 2012, my father died of cancer and exactly three weeks earlier his sister had died of ovarian cancer. Earlier this year, my older sister had a suspicious lump and as we were anxiously waiting for the results, we received a letter. I was given this gift of knowledge earlier by a first paternal cousin that I had lost contact with many years ago. She informed us that she had been diagnosed at age 49 with a very rare and aggressive form of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. She fought the cancer bravely and is currently in remission but underwent testing and was diagnosed with a BRCA1 mutation. She encouraged all of the female (and male relatives) on my paternal side of the family to be tested for this genetic mutation as our risk of inheriting the mutation was a 50/50 chance. I was terrified at the possibility but as the mother of three young children I knew that I had to see a genetic counselor and my ob/gyn specialist as soon as possible. I drew upon every ounce of inner strength and made the appointment. More of my story to come………………..
I highly encourage all women to take their health seriously and provide regular breast self-checks in addition to regular screening at your physician’s office. The Plexus Breast Chek Kit is a wonderful way to make self-checks easy because the kit enhances touch sensory and therefore makes the breast exam more effective and accurate.
The Plexus Breast Chek Kit ($34.95) includes two micro-thin layers of polyurethane with a non-toxic lubricant sealed in between. I placed the Breast Chek on my breast and the bottom layer adhered gently to the skin, remaining in place so that the upper layer slid freely under my fingertips. The upper layer slid over the bottom layer so that friction is reduced significantly. This “sensory touch magnification” gave me much better sensation to heck for lumps, bumps and anything unusual in the breast and armpit area. I do a self-guided breast exam twice a month and this was by far the easiest exam I have ever done. It made a huge difference in the process and I will continue to use the Plexus Breast Chek Kit on a regular basis.
During the month of October, the Plexus Breast Chek Kit is available for a BOGO (Buy One Get One Free) special….what a great way to promote your health and save money! These would make thoughtful gift ideas for your mom, sisters and friends too. You are invited to visit Live Plexus Slim (Karen Underwood) to purchase your kit and browse the entire product line.
