How often do you take time out of your day to relax? I find myself always rushing and it feels like there’s never enough hours in the day to get things done. I’m working on carving out more time to do the things I enjoy doing. It’s hard though when you are used to always putting other people first.
Baby steps. I’m working on trying to do at least one thing I like every day that’s just for me. These are a few of the activities I enjoy and that help me relax.
1. Reading. I’ve been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. My home is full of bookcases with books that I have read and many more that I plan to read. For years, I didn’t read anything. My kids were young and I was working full-time and in school. At the end of the day I was just too exhausted to read. I realized that I missed it a lot. There’s nothing like sitting down to read a good book and be swept away with the story and the characters. I’ve finally got into my reading groove again. I read every night before bed without fail. I look forward to it actually. It’s been a good thing for me and it helps me relax and makes falling asleep much easier.
2. Manicures. I was a nail biter. My nails always were so short, full of hangnails and just ugly to look at. I never was one for painting nails until a few months ago. I actually enjoy keeping my nails painted and pretty. I also stopped biting my nails and the hangnails disappeared. My nail painting skills are improving. I don’t think I could do fancy designs on them yet, but at least now I don’t get the polish all over my fingers. It’s something nice I do for myself once a week and I love trying different shades of polish.
3. Massage. Last month I started going for a massage at our local spa. I was getting headaches almost everyday and my neck hurt so badly. My doctor said it was tension and that I should try massage. So I did. The first one I had was an Indian Head Massage and it was amazing! My Massage Therapist has good strong hands and was able to work out the knots in my neck and upper back. I see her about every 3 weeks and my headaches have greatly improved.
