Chocolate lovers, you are in for a real treat today with this scrumptious old fashioned chocolate fudge pie recipe. It reminds me of brownies! I love to eat mine while it’s still warm so that the pie melts the ice cream a little.

It’s also a pretty simple recipe that won’t take much time to whip up. I love easy recipes because that means I don’t have to wait too long to eat it!

Make it for a special occasion (like Easter) or just because. Do we really need a reason to eat more chocolate? I don’t think so!

    Variations or Substitutions

    • Use a graham cracker crust, Oreo crust or a homemade pie crust if you prefer.
    • Substitute brown sugar for the granulated sugar.
    • Use bittersweet chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate or dark chocolate instead of the unsweetened chocolate. You may want to reduce the sugar by 1/4 cup.
    • Switch out the all-purpose flour for the whole wheat flour.
    • Add in chopped walnuts or pecans for extra crunch.
    • Add 1 teaspoon of espresso powder to the mixture to accentuate the chocolate flavors.

    Storage Instructions

Cover any leftover pie with plastic wrap or place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I recommend warming the pie up a little in the microwave before serving.

    Can I Freeze?

Yes, you can freeze fudge pie.

Make sure to cool the pie completely first. Cover it tightly in plastic wrap and then again in aluminum foil. This helps to prevent freezer burn.

Place the pie in a freezer bag and store in the freezer for up to 2 months.

When you’re ready to serve the pie, allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat at 350F for about 10 to 15 minutes, until warmed through.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Use good quality chocolate. The quality of your ingredients will impact the taste of your pie.
    • Don’t burn the chocolate. When you are melting the chocolate and butter, make sure to not overheat the chocolate or it can seize and become grainy.
    • Don’t overmix the filling. This can make the pie too dense and hard. Mix until just combined.
    • Serve with ice cream or whipped cream. It’s a little indulgence that makes the experience so much better.

    FAQ

    What is Fudge Pie?

Fudge Pie is rich and decadent chocolate dessert that is similar to a fudge brownie, but in a pie format. It’s usually made with melted chocolate, sugar, butter, eggs and flour. Some people add in vanilla extract (I do!), nuts or espresso powder. It’s sometimes made in a pie shell. It’s typically served with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a slice of pie.

    Can I Make Ahead?

Yes, you can bake the pie a day or two ahead of time and store in the refrigerator. Make sure the pie is tightly covered in plastic wrap. Reheat at 350F for 10 to 15 minutes.

How Do I Know When My Fudge Pie is Done Baking?

Try inserting a toothpick in the center of the pie. If it comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs, it’s done.
It’s better to underbake than overbake if you’re not sure. The pie will continue to bake a little as it cools and sets.
