Protect Your Home with Canary

If you’ve ever been a victim of theft, you’ll know how awful it feels. Not only is it upsetting to lose your possessions, but also knowing that your space was violated is something that stays with you. We’ve had break-ins before in our vehicles where nothing of real value was taken, but I remember that horrible feeling.

I’ve been uneasy since we moved back to Ontario because we didn’t have a home security system. I worry when I’m away about break-ins and something happening to my home. Now that I’m local to family, I’m sure I’d hear about it if my house burned down, but it’s comforting to be able to physically see your house is fine when you’re away. With Canary home security system, I can do just that!

Home security has come a long way since the last time I had a system installed. We lived in Edmonton at the time and a tech came over to hardwire it in. We had holes to patch up in the walls and it was a bit of a mess. Plus, the monthly plan was not cheap and we were locked into a long-term contract. I’m much preferring the new way of home security. It’s so much easier to install (you do it yourself!) and it’s more affordable.

Meet Canary – my complete home security system! It’s packed into a single device that you control from your smartphone. It comes with a wide-angle HD camera, microphone, speaker, 90+dB siren plus temperature, humidity and air quality sensors. When was the last time you’ve seen a security system include all that? I was blown away at how much Canary can do.

Place Canary on a flat surface and plug it in. I have mine in the hub of the home – the kitchen. Setting it up was so simple. After I downloaded the Canary app and opened it up on my smartphone, it walked me through the few steps to get it working. Canary connects to your home WiFi and you’ll need at least 1 Mbps upload speed. I was surprised how easy it was. Within a matter of minutes, my Canary was up and running.

It’s nice to be able to keep an eye on my cats when I’m not in the room. I had a little chuckle over little Reggie’s antics. He knows he is not supposed to go on the counters!

With the Canary app, you’ll be able to see and hear what is happening at your home. You’ll get video notifications of unusual events and can watch the clips on your smartphone. It’s a smart app and the more you use it, the better it gets. It “learns” which events are important and will only send you notifications of them.

It is able to sense when you or your family comes and goes and can switch modes automatically. I left the house to go to water the garden and it knew that I did. It’s pretty cool.

The Home Health feature is an added bonus. Canary monitors the indoor air quality, temperature and humidity. It was a humid day as you can see!

I liked that I could enable a Privacy mode if I needed to. It turns the camera and microphone completely off.

Hopefully, I’ll never have to “sound the alarm”, but I like knowing it’s there if I need it. Canary has a built-in 90 decibel alarm that you control as well as an automatic connection to the local authorities.

One HUGE perk for me was the no contract or monthly fee. Every Canary comes with a starter plan that includes access to the previous 12 hours and five bookmarked videos on Canary Cloud. You have the option to buy a premium plan if you like and even they are very affordable.

Anyone can use Canary. You can own your home or rent. All you really need is smartphone and home WiFi.
