A Fashion Blast From the Past

Disclosure: This blog post comes by way of the folks at RetailMeNot, who contacted me with an opportunity to get to know their site and app. All thoughts and experiences are my own.

Back-to-school fashion trends have changed over the years. I was looking through my old photo albums recently and chuckling to myself at some of the crazy outfits I wore. One thing that has remained consistent about back-to-school fashion is that kids want to look their best. As a mom of two fashionistas, I’m very conscious of that fact and can totally relate to where they’re coming from.

I was about 10 years old when I began to care more about my appearance. I wanted to look good at school and considered myself to be a pretty trendy kid. It helped that my mom kept up with what was “in”. She was a savvy shopper herself and always knew where to find the best deals on back-to-school shopping.

Fast-forward to today, and it’s an understatement to say that the times have changed. So much is different now, and I’m not just talking about fashion- even the way we shop has changed. I think we’re actually better off nowadays. We have so much more selection thanks to the Internet and can access amazing deals and coupons to save money on whatever it is we are shopping for.

Let’s take a look at my fashion blast from the past. Prepare yourself for some retro fun!

My style sense has greatly evolved over the years. For example, I’m no longer wearing pants up to my armpits.

I’ve also stopped rolling up my jeans to show off my nice new socks and pink Converse shoes.

It’s worth noting that Converse shoes are still considered stylish. Turns out, I was fashion forward without realizing it back in the day! In fact, one of my good friends only wears Converse. Pick some up for back to school at Famous Footwear. Buy through RetailMeNot to receive 15% off your order, plus buy one, get one 50% off in stores and online.

Brightly colored jeans and pants were also popular when I was growing up. I loved these red jeans so much. However, I doubt I’ll ever go back to wearing high-waisted pants! I found a pair of red pants on Express that are much more modern and flattering to wear. Plus, RetailMeNot has a coupon to save 10% off in stores and online. Sweet!

Who remembers wearing these knit sweaters in the early ’90s? As you can see, both my cousin and I were matchy-matchy here. I’d actually still wear this sweater today if I knew where it was. It’s a classic.

I found a gorgeous Gray Marled Open Stitch Dolman Sweater at Express that reminds me a bit of this look. The sweater will also pair nicely with a variety of styles. Don’t forget to use your coupon code from RetailMeNot to save on your purchase!

During the colder months, turtlenecks and jeans were my typical attire. I loved how the turtleneck kept me warm in our drafty school, and I found the top slimming.

My collection of turtlenecks probably took up half my closet!

I had turtlenecks that were a baggy fit and others that were more figure-hugging.

Burgundy was a popular color in the ’90s. I likely wouldn’t wear this shade today, though. Kmart has some classic styles in softer colors like pinks and blues that I’d prefer to wear now. Express also has a sleeveless turtleneck that would look cute on my oldest daughter.

One item that was on my back-to-school list every year was a new pair of jeans! Nothing beats the confident feeling you get when you wear your favorite pair of denim. I loved how I looked in my boot-cut jeans. Bonus: they’re still in fashion today! I found an awesome deal at Kohl’s on this pair of Mudd Bootcut Jeans for my youngest daughter. Before you buy, make sure to snag a coupon code to save $$$.

Who remembers wearing vests in the early ’90s? The louder the print, the better! Vests could totally transform a blah outfit into something hip and cool. I was excited to find this Sanctuary Printed Sweater Vest at Macy’s. It would look awesome with a pair of boot-cut jeans. Get an additional 15% off your order when you shop through RetailMeNot.

During my last year of high school, I wore a lot of dresses. My favorite was this brown slipover dress covered in little white flowers. Hanna Andersson has a similar up-to-date version with its Window Pane Knit Dress. Bonus: New customers also receive 15% off their order!

I’m happy to see the tiered skirt making a comeback. I remember wearing them quite a bit in the late ’80s. I always thought they were so pretty and feminine. Aero has a variety of styles to choose from, and you can receive an extra 30% off Aero clearance, plus get free shipping on $75. The Inky Ikat Print Smocked Tiered Skirt is adorable!

My mom liked to dress my younger sister and me in matching outfits. Don’t you love our polka dots? Although I probably wouldn’t dress my youngest daughter in this outfit today, I would buy her this cute polka-dot denim skirt at Walmart. And it’s on clearance!

My style sense has changed over the years along with the fashion trends. However, there are a few things that have remained constant: I want clothes that make me feel confident; I’ll never say no to good pair of comfy jeans; and lastly, I love a good bargain! I take advantage of sales and coupons whenever I can. You can look amazing without spending a fortune.
