20 Ways to Use Peppermint Essential Oil

I’ve been using peppermint essential oil for years without even realizing it! I first tried it in a headache salve about five years ago. I didn’t really think much about the ingredients. All I knew is that it gave me a cooling, numbing sensation that made my head feel a million times better. The person who made it doesn’t sell it anymore so I was trying to make it last as long as possible. I don’t need to worry about that now because I can make my own with peppermint essential oil. I figured out what was in it and why it worked so well for my headaches. The secret ingredient was peppermint essential oil!

Ways to Use Peppermint Essential Oil

1. Ease nausea. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the inside of your wrists or simply open the bottle and take a good sniff.

2. Help congestion due to colds and coughs. Diffuse several drops of  peppermint essential oil in a diffuser. You can also apply topically by adding a few drops to some fractionated coconut oil (or other carrier oil) and rubbing on your chest.

3. Help a headache. Rub a few drops of peppermint essential oil (in a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin) on your forehead or back of your neck. I use it neat on my head because it doesn’t bother me. It helps to relieve the pain and takes the edge off for awhile so I can function. I also use peppermint essential oil as the main ingredient in my DIY Headache Helper.

4. Boost your energy. Peppermint essential is great during the mid afternoon slump when you just want to take a nap. Add some drops to a diffuser or apply it to the back of your neck to increase alertness. I’ve heard of some people putting a dab under their nose, but I haven’t tried that.

5. Helps dandruff. Add a drop or two of peppermint essential oil to your shampoo and lather away.

6. Get rid of ants. Add peppermint essential oil to a cottonball and leave it where the ants congregate. Ants dislike mint!

7. Keep your garbage can or compost smelling fresh. Add peppermint essential oil to your garbage bag or compost bin to get a minty fresh scent instead of a rotten one.

8. Soothe sore, tired feet. Soak your feet in a warm foot bath with water and a few drops of peppermint essential oil to ease your muscle aches and pains.

9. Curb cravings. Open your bottle of peppermint essential oil and sniff away! It helps me to stop the constant snacking throughout the day.

10. Helps relieve the itch of bug bites. Mix together lavender essential oil and peppermint essential oil (with a carrier oil if you prefer) and dab on the bite.

11. Freshen breath. Make your own mouthwash by adding some drops of peppermint essential oil to a glass of water. Swish away and spit!

12. Help a fever. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a carrier oil and rub a little on your upper back or back of the neck and soles of your feet.

13. Gas, bloating and digestive upset. Dilute in a carrier oil and rub on your stomach to help ease your discomfort.

14. Add to recipes for a minty flavour. You only need a drop or two to enhance the taste! I want to try this Chocolate Mint Smoothie.

15. Add to herbal tea or plain hot water. Give your hot beverage a little pep with a drop of peppermint essential oil.

16. Kill aphids. Mix a few drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle and spray on your plants.

17. Cool down hot flashes. Make a body spritz with a couple drops of peppermint essential oil and water. Spray on yourself as required.

18. Make your own massage oil. Add peppermint essential oil to almond oil for an invigorating massage!

19. Soothe skin with a homemade lotion. Make your own lotion from coconut oil, peppermint essential oil and Vitamin E! Peppermint is also good for oily skin (like mine!).

20. Remove ticks. I hope I never have to do this, but at least now I know how. Soak the end of a Q-tip in peppermint essential oil and then rub the tick. The tick will withdraw and then you can pull it out.
