I didn’t get my first smartphone until 2012 even though I’d already been blogging for years. I figured I didn’t need one and thought the cost would be too much for me. Looking back, I see that I was wrong about a few things. I did need a phone for both work and personal reasons and it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to have one. Now I’m never without my smartphone. I use it for just about everything!

I recently had the chance to experience ALCATEL ONETOUCH – they are one of the world’s top ten mobile phone manufacturers and are quickly rising. Plus they are now in Canada. I’d never heard of the brand before until I received an email about trying out a phone and tablet before the Christmas holidays. Their mobile devices run on Android which I’m a little familiar with. I’ve had Android tablets in the past, but this would be my first Android phone.

My phone is an ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Idol 2S and I was also sent a temporary SIM card for Bell Mobility to fully use it.  Bell Mobility is Canada’s largest LTE network. I’ve been a customer since 2011. The first thing I noticed when unboxing the phone was how slim it was! It’s very lightweight with a vivid 5 inch HD display. It was pre-loaded with most of the apps I’m already familiar with using. I did check the Google Play Store and browsed their selection of apps to see if any caught my eye.

I also found the phone to be intuitive and very easy to use. I was able to start using it immediately upon set up and liked that there wasn’t a huge learning curve that you might find with other types of phones. The phone has a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor allowing you to easily multi-task and run multiple apps simultaneously. I always have a ton of apps open at the same time and have never noticed an issue in terms of speed or performance.

Bell TV app! I think this is my favourite app on the phone. There are over 110 channels to choose from in categories like sports, news, entertainment, kids shows, and more. Watch TV right on your phone. You can set alerts to be notified when your favourite shows are on or pick one of the On Demand programs or movies to watch anytime. This app is preinstalled on the phone so it will be there when you buy it.

Another feature I always check out on phones is the camera. The ALCATEL ONETOUCH Idol 2S has an 8MP camera as well as a camcorder. At first I wasn’t too sure I liked the camera because my images looked dull. However once I discovered the variety of settings to choose from it was smooth sailing! You can pick HDR, Panorama, Smile Night, Sports or Micro depending on the type of photo you are taking. I’ve been using Micro a lot of close up, indoor pictures. Panorama is great for taking pictures outdoors when you have a big subject – think landscapes!

Here’s a couple images I took with the camera on Micro setting. Note these are unedited.

The battery life is another important thing to consider. The phone gives you 16.5 hours of talk time and 520 hours on standby. I found the battery life comparable to other phones I’ve owned. If you are using it constantly it will drain faster than if you use it intermittently.

The price is great! You can get this phone for $0 down with a two year term OR purchase it for $299 with no term.

Next up is the ALCATEL ONETOUCH Pop 7 tablet which also run on an Android operation system. It features a 7 inch screen and is slim and easy to hold. Mine is a gorgeous turquoise colour which really makes it stand out or “pop”. I wonder if that’s where it got its name? My youngest daughter has taken over the tablet. She connects to our home WiFi and watches funny cat YouTube videos. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

It also comes with apps already loaded in and you can watch movies or read books with the Play Books or Play Movies. I also have a Chromecast so you can sync your tablet to your TV and watch on a bigger screen.

My box was missing a cable to charge the tablet, but luckily the phone cord worked for the tablet so I was good to go!

I found the performance good and was able to multi-task just like the phone. It has a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor and was fast even with our slow Wifi connection.

This is a great tablet for the kids to use to play games or watch movies. It’s also very affordable at $29.95 with a 2-year term or $179.95 with no term.

Are you looking to get a new phone or tablet?
