About the Movie

Quirky, mischievous and good-hearted, the Boxtrolls are unique creatures who have lovingly raised a human boy named Eggs in a fantastical charming cavern below the bustling streets of Cheesebridge. But when the evil Archibald Snatcher schemes to capture Eggs’ family, it’s up to Eggs and his feisty new friend Winnie to save the Boxtrolls!

Based upon the book Here Be Monsters!, The Boxtrolls voice cast also includes Academy Award® nominee Toni Collette, Jared Harris (Mad Men), Nick Frost (The World’s End), Richard Ayoade (The Watch), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead).

My Review

After watching The Boxtrolls twice now with my 10 year old daughter, I can see why it has won so many awards. It was a joy to watch!

The Boxtrolls are little collectors who head out into the city when all its residents are in bed. They scavenge for anything they can find. What seems like junk to most of us, is considered a treasure by these adorable creatures.

They got a bad reputation after a baby went missing and it was assumed he was taken by the boxtrolls. Yes, he was, but there is more to the story than meets the eye as the viewer finds out. This baby is raised by the boxtrolls and is known as “Eggs”. And yes, Eggs wears a box too although as he gets older, the box gets just a little too small for him!

There were a few moments during the movie that we were holding our breath to see what was going to happen. Eggs sneaks into Mr. Snatchers lair to rescue his fellow boxtrolls and not get caught. I was watching intently and hoping that they wouldn’t see him!

I think my favourite part of the movie where I literally laughed out loud was Eggs going to a society function with his new friend, Winnie. Winnie was trying to educate Eggs on how to act properly and “normal” when he interacts with people.  You need to watch what he does at the food table! So funny.

The Boxtrolls is a wonderful movie for all ages to enjoy. The next thing I want to do is watch the Blu-ray 3D. I don’t have any of the equipment yet, but have friends that do so we’ll be checking it out at their place soon!
