When Carl emailed me at the beginning of the week with the week 5 challenge for the SUBWAY Canada Commit to Fit Challenge, I had no idea what I could do. The challenge seems simple enough: try something new. I’ve got walking down, but was in deep thought about what else I could do. I’m very limited physically with the activities I can do because of chronic pain. I’ll never be able to ride a bike again or go for a run. I told myself I’d sleep on it and see if inspiration would hit my subconscious during the night. It’s happened before where I go to bed with a question and wake up with an answer.
The idea came to me in the morning so it may have been planted in the middle of the night – who knows! I realized I was looking at it all wrong. I decided to try something I could do in my home by myself and see what happens. It may seem simple enough, but I struggled in the past doing it: stretches!
A few years ago I picked up a book written by a pelvic floor physiotherapist. She had written a book showing stretches perfect for anyone suffering with my type of chronic pain. They are meant to strengthen not only the pelvis and hips, but the core.
The first few days were rough and I wasn’t sure I was going to continue. My muscles are already tense and sore so I had to take it really slow. I’m working on it though and telling myself it will get easier as I get stronger.
Another highlight of the week was my consultation with Helene from HC Nutrition. She gave me some great advice and helped steer me on the right path to reach my goals. I told her about one of my struggles – eating at night. I’m always hungry in the evenings. She said I need to eat more during the day and asked if I skip breakfast often. Guilty!
I’m determined to make positive lifestyle changes that stick. On to week 6!
