My Review:

Ben Stiller stars and directs The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. And what a powerful, moving film it is! Ben Stiller portrays Walter Mitty, a Negative Asset Manager for LIFE magazine. He lives an ordinary life doing ordinary things, but is longing for something more deep down. He is well-known to completely zone out during conversations with people and appears like he is off in his own little world. In reality, Walter is playing out the scene the way he wishes it would be in his head. He daydreams that he is doing extraordinary things like super heroes would do. At first I wondered if the whole movie would be with just him zoning out and flashing to these spectacular action-packed scenes, but don’t worry it doesn’t.

Things change drastically for Walter after he learns that LIFE magazine is restructuring into LIFE Online and are no longer printing magazines after the next issue. Shawn O’Connell, the owner of LIFE magazine, has selected Negative 25 to be the cover for the final edition. It’s Walter’s job as Negative Asset Manager to locate Negative 25  in his office/archives and unfortunately, it is nowhere to be found! Of course, not being able to find such an important image would send terror through anyone’s hearts and Walter is in panic mode.

Walter tries desperately to locate Shawn O’Connell who is of no fixed address since he is always traveling for work. He gets word that he is in Greenland of all places. On a whim, Walter decides he must travel to Greenland and find him. This was a treat for me to see! I’ve never seen Greenland portrayed in a movie and honestly I didn’t even realize that you could travel there. In the movie, one local says 8 people live there. I googled Greenland during the movie and saw that it boasts a population of just a little over 56,000!

He learns that Shawn is on a boat, but Walter has no way to reach him since the boat’s radio is down. Luckily (or maybe not!)  he finds a (drunk) helicopter pilot who is going to drop off the parts to fix the radio on the boat.

The movie continues on with action-packed scenes like Walter narrowly missing being eaten by a shark, a volcanic eruption and skateboarding in Iceland and mountain climbing in the Himalayas of Afghanistan. The cinematography was spectacular. I was especially enchanted by Iceland. Watching him skateboard through the gorgeous landscapes gave me chills.

My takeaway from the movie was to follow your dreams and go after what you want in life. You can daydream about it all you want, but until you make the first step, it’s only just a dream. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is inspirational, feel-good type of film that I was sad to see end. I would watch it again in a heartbeat. It’s a film the entire family can enjoy and have a meaningful discussion about the storyline and characters.

I was moved to tears at the end. You’ll have to watch and find out though, but it has something to do with the final cover of LIFE.

If you’ve seen the movie, I’d love to hear how you liked it.
