Book Review | Get Started Baking

My Review:

This month DK Canada is encouraging Canadians to Start Something New! They are featuring a wide variety of books geared for beginners who are interested in starting a new hobby or learning about a particular subject. I picked up a copy of Get Started Baking for a couple reasons. The first one is that even though I already do some baking, I’m nowhere near an expert and can always use some tips and tricks. The second reason I wanted the book was for my oldest daughter, Olivia. She’s turning 16 years old this year and has developed a real talent for cooking and baking. I thought it would fun for us both to work through the book together and learn a thing or two!

What I like about this book is that it has recipes for both beginners and more experienced bakers. It’s a book you can use after you’ve learned the basics to try your hand at more difficult recipes. It begins by covering the basics of baking including the equipment you’ll need and essential ingredients to have in your pantry. I realize I’m missing a few important pieces of baking equipment like a palette knife and a tart pan. 

Section 1 is called Start Simple and it teaches easy to make recipes step-by-step including quick cakes, cookies, no-bake cheesecake and quick breads. I need to try the meringue since that’s something I’m not used to making.  Each recipe lists detailed steps and shows pictures through the entire process. I think that added bonus makes it much easier to follow along and see what your recipe is supposed to look like at each step.

Section 2 is titled Build On It and asks to you to apply the techniques you’ve learned and create recipes that are a little more advanced. The recipes here included Baked Cheesecake, Creamed Cakes, Brownies, Tarts and Pies and Yeast-risen Bread. I need to make the Blueberry Ripple Cheesecake. It looks so tempting! 

It also has a couple pages on the science of making pie dough and shows you the “how” and the “why” of the process. It was quite interesting to learn!

Lastly, Section 3 is Take It Further and features more advanced techniques and recipes. You’ll learn how to bake choux pastry, danish pastry and artisan breads. I’d love to try the Sourdough Bread recipe down the road and see if I can do it (and actually eat it!).
