Play Like a Girl
We are a family of all girls. I have two daughters, two sisters and a niece. Even my mom has two sisters (no brothers) and my dad has four sisters and only one brother. I’ve never known what it was like to have a boy in the house (besides my dad or my husband). I feel very blessed to be the mother of two daughters!
Both my daughters are athletic and enjoy playing sports and other physical activities. We’ve had them in all kinds of organized sports and lessons over the years including soccer, baseball, gymnastics, dancing, figure skating and track to name a few. Their dad is a huge hockey fan and always has the girls cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs whenever they are playing on TV.
Even though I haven’t played much sports in recent years, I still make the effort to support my daughters in whatever they do. I’ve sat in the sidelines at many a soccer game or baseball game and cheered them on. My oldest daughter, Olivia, is very talented and excels at whatever she plays. In her soccer games, she’s one of the fastest runners on the team. Her team won a few tournaments and Olivia was a big part of the success. It made me beam with pride to see her excel and even better, I loved seeing how it made her feel. She was so excited and it helped build up her self-confidence. I think that’s important in young girls to have a good sense of self-esteem and playing sports is an excellent way to help achieve that.
Olivia is still active in sports at her high school and plays badminton and runs track. I always remind her how proud I am her of and to have fun with it. She’s competitive, but mainly does it for the pure enjoyment of the game. Through sports, she’s had the opportunity to create strong friendships with girls with the same interests. Watching her play makes me a little nostalgic about my childhood playing baseball. One of my greatest moments was catching a fly ball for the team. I didn’t have even close to the same level of athleticism as Olivia, but it made me feel so empowered and good inside….like I could do anything! There’s nothing like that feeling of being on top of the world.
Verizon believes in the power of sports and the impact they can have on the life of girls. They’ve created a series of videos featuring the FiOS Football Girl who uses the FiOS technology to showoff her footballs skills to her older brother.
Do you have a daughter whose athletic achievements you are proud of? If so, Verizon wants to hear from you! They’ve created Play Like a Girl as a place for parents to visit and share the impact that sport has had on the lives of girls as well as their proudest moments playing sports.
