Title: My Home: An Oneida Legend
In the Oneida society, passing on oral tradition to children from generation to generation represents the soul of the Oneida people. In the award-winning book and short film, My Home: An Oneida Legend children (ages 5-8) will learn about Oneida traditional beliefs from an Elder who can speak with meaning and power. This story by the Oneida Indian Nation and its production company Four Directions Productions, follows Eli who is an Oneida boy on his very first fishing trip as he listens to his Grandfather tell the tale of a sassy young turtle who discovers upon waking that her not-so-friendly neighbor beaver has changed her home. The beaver is focused on living a life of technology instead of respecting the world and beautiful nature around him and doesn’t mind if the environment suffers for “progress”. The turtle becomes upset and realizes that she will have to stop the beaver in order to save her home, her life and the world around her.
I was honored to have the opportunity to read this book and view the Blu-ray and DVD film with my three children. In my opinion, the message of preserving our environment is so crucial to pass on to our youth and I feel so proud whenever my children speak out in frustration when they see that our beloved Florida woods are cut down to build stores and buildings that are not needed. They were absolutely captivated by this story and even more engaged in the short film that comes along with the book. The graphics and animation is stunning and the characters are very well developed. The message is timeless and we even made the recipe in the back of the book for Corn Soup: An Oneida Indian Recipe (absolutely delicious)! What a wonderful and timeless message for children (and adults) of all ages.
My Home: An Oneida Legend is available as a gift set for purchase which includes a hardcover book + Blu-ray + DVD combo for the SRP of $24.95.
