My three young children love to sing and dance. I don’t like most of the music played on the radio so we are always looking for fun, creative music on CD. I love to expose my children to different kinds of age appropriate music so that they can develop an appreciation for music at an early age. This season there are lots of great musical ideas by very talented artists for children including:
- Trout Fishing in America – Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers
- Heidi Swedberg – My Cup of Tea
- Mr. Palindrome – Smiley Face Sticker
- Lloyd Miller – S.S. Brooklyn
- Justin Roberts – Recess
Trout Fishing in America has just released Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers ($14) which has songs that can be enjoyed by the entire family. We like that the lyrics are fun and my kids love singing along to the silly and fun title song shouting “Rubber Baby Buggy Bumbers” while belly laughing as their tongues get twisted. Creepy Dead Bugs was another favorite with my boys and my five year old even gave us a show stopping performance!
Heidi Swedberg (I LOVED her as George Costanza’s fiancée on the show Seinfeld) and the Sukey Jump Band is celebrating the release of her latest CD, My Cup of Tea ($15) which is an excellent introduction to the ukuele and other instruments as well as a blend of folk and pop music for my children. This is a great CD for a children’s party as it is lively, fun and encourages the children to move and groove to the fun songs. We had fun learning about the instruments that they heard playing on this CD and they even put together their own band to bring some of these songs to life even more.
My kids love Mr. Palindrome who is known as “Australia’s Word-Playing Sensation” and his newest CD, Smiley Face Sticker ($15). We actually use this CD in both our homeschool music class AND in our language arts class. They forget they are actually learning while learning big words while singing VERY silly songs. I warn you that these songs are very catchy for adults too as I find myself humming and singing along with the kids (and possibly in the shower too).
S.S. Brooklyn by Lloyd H. Miller ($10) is another family-friendly CD that is hilarious as children try to figure out the meaning of the lyrics and when they do (as in the title song) the giggling starts and doesn’t stop. Lloyd H. Miller is the leader of the Deedle Deedle Dees and this is his first solo album. While this is our first introduction to his music we definitely plan to check out other titles too. This music can also be purchased in the iTunes store and Amazon.com too!
Justin Robert’s Recess album ($15) is the latest from this award-winning children’s musical artist. It features fun Indie Rock songs such as I’ll Be An Alien, Hopscotch, Red Bird and The Princess Wore Pink. This is one of our favorite’s to listen to in the car because my sons and daughter like it equally so it is often requested for our play list.
One lucky reader will receive a prize package that includes ALL five CD’s featured in this post! That is a $69 value!
