My Review:

Being a huge horror buff, I loved American Horror Story Season One. I don’t have cable so I was anticipating the release of the second season on blu-ray and quickly scooped it up to watch over the past week. What’s unique about this show is that you don’t have to watch the first season to know what’s happening in the second. Each season is standalone and a completely different story and cast of characters. American Horror Story Asylum focuses on life at an insane asylum, Briarcliff Manor, in the 1960s. It had all the elements of a good horror story: plot twists, spooky atmosphere, gore and a cast of characters with many layers! Everyone has a secret I learned.

Reporter, Lana Winters, went to Briarcliff to do a story on it’s newest patient: a serial killer called Bloody Face. She was in for the shock of her life in a strange twist of events where she became a patient at Briarcliff. Let me tell you that this is NOT a place you want to be! I don’t know what’s worse the disgusting living conditions, the barbaric psychiatric treatments popular in that era or the corrupt nuns and staff at the asylum. I think the actors in this series did an amazing job at conveying at portraying their characters. I especially thought the nun who played Mary Eunice had an award-winning performance as first a sweet nun and then one being taken over by an evil entity. That scene is the stuff of nightmares.

American Horror Story Asylum is not for the faint of heart. It’s very gory with lots of blood and disturbing imagery. I had to shield my eyes a few times because there was a couple scenes in it that bothered me. The worst one in my opinion was toward the end of the season when Lana has the hanger….I don’t want to give it away, but it made me physically cringe to know what she was going to do with it. Just expect lots and lots of blood and I wouldn’t want my kids in the room with me when this show is on the TV!

I was trying to figure out if there was even one likable character in the cast. At first I thought it would be Lana Winters, but she changed and evolved throughout the show and made me not like her much when the season ended. I hated Sister Jude at the start of the show. She’s played by the talented Jessica Lange. I ended up feeling pity and sympathy towards her character by the end. I also thought Dr. Oliver Thredson was likable. That was until I discovered more about his character. Prepare to be shocked and disgusted!

This season has a lot of scary elements including aliens, murders, demonic possession, people coming back from the dead, human experiments and more. It’s pretty freaky and intense at times, but I loved every minute of it! Season three can’t come out on blu-ray soon enough!
