Coin Lithium Battery Safety

Disclosure: I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a sample of the product for review purposes. The opinions are my own, based on my personal experience with the product.

We use numerous coin lithium batteries in our home and I never realized that it could be a potential safety hazard for my three children. I am not alone as studies have shown that 62% of parents are not aware that coin lithium batteries can put your child at risk for serious chemical burns if ingested!

Energizer® has recognized this potential risk and teamed up with the National Safety Council to be the first industry leader to voluntarily develop special packaging for its 20 millimeter coin lithium batteries. This new packaging meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s strictest guidelines for child-resistant packaging. In addition, they have created The Battery Controlled national awareness campaign along with Safe Kids Worldwide which helps alert parents and caregivers to the danger of a child swallowing a coin lithium battery.

Coin Lithium Battery Safety

How can you keep your family safe? Energizer has helped to develop these following guidelines:

The 4 S’s of Coin Lithium Battery Safety

  • STORE devices that use coin lithium batteries out of reach of children
  • SECURE the battery compartments of devices
  • SELECT battery packaging that meets federal guidelines for child resistance, such as Energizer’s coin lithium battery packaging
  • SHARE this information with your friends and family

My husband and I took the challenge to test out the new packaging and we were very impressed with the new special packaging for Energizer® 20 millimeter coin lithium batteries. While the other brand packaging we tested could easily be opened by all three of our children ages 5, 6 and 8, the new Energizer® packaging could not easily be opened by a child and prevented access. My husband and I were both able to get into the Energizer® packaging by simply using our household scissors making it convenient for us but also giving us the peace of mind that our children cannot easily open it should they find the packaging in our battery drawer. Nice job…..Energizer®!

I appreciate that Energizer® identified a potential hazard for children and acted voluntarily to try to keep our families safe and will be purchasing this brand for all of our coin lithium battery needs from now on.
