I home educate my three young children and we have music class at least three times per week. I introduced them to classical music at a young age so that they would establish an appreciation for the arts early in life. We also love nature and spend lots of time observing our backyard birds including cardinals, hummingbirds, robins and blue jays.
We recently discovered a wonderful resource for our music class, Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music Book & music CD set. Written by Ana Gerhard and beautifully illustrated by Cecelia Varela, this book and music CD explores classical music from the perspective of the birdsong and it is amazing!
Each day we read one passage and discuss the musician and instruments pertaining to the piece and listen to the accompanying music. For example, we have enjoyed The Goldfinch by Antonio Vivaldi (listen for the flute and orchestra) and Melancholy by Einojuhani Rautavaara. I adore this Concerto for birds and orchestra which features the “soloists” i.e. the cranes of the North Pole.
We recently watched Peter and the Wolf and my eight year old son really liked listening to The Bird from Peter and the Wolf (Serguei Prokofiev) and the flute solo. My younger children flipped to Hens and Roosters from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. This is one of our favorites and since we have three backyard hens this was especially meaningful.
There are 20 beautiful songs to accompany each of the 20 detailed descriptions about the composer, creative inspiration and musical instruments which bring the music to life for little ears. I also appreciate the section dedicated to the Composers and we have decided to study our favorites further over the summer. My son liked reading the glossary of musical terms and has asked if he can take formal guitar lessons.
Thanks to wonderful resources like Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music (list price $16.95) it looks as though my dream has come true that my children have really developed a love for good music!
