Super Duper Publications Review
My eight year old is so shy and socially awkward, especially in group settings that we had him tested for Asperger’s Syndrome last year. Thankfully, he is just very introverted and it was recommended to us that we provide him with different enrichment activities to help him to open up.
I had discovered Super Duper® Publications a few months ago and found it to be a treasure trove of educational games and resources. What I didn’t realize is that this company has many additional resources available to help encourage children to open up and gain self-confidence and valuable social skills.
The Topic Talk™ Conversation Card Game ($32.95) is a fabulous and fun way to get my three children talking about a wide range of topics including asking questions, making comments or maintaining the topic. There is a whopping 205 play cards in this game i.e. 75 Topic Cards, 70 Talk Cards, 30 Question Cards, 20 Double Talk Cards and 10 Wild Cards plus the 5 minute timer (which was a bit hit with my kids). The object of this game is to separate and shuffle up the four groups of Conversation Cards. The players will then turn over a Topic Card and the let the conversation begin. There are lots of fun twists and turns to make this a great game and I even joined in on the fun too much to their delight. The colorful cards and topics are engaging for children of all ages and examples of “Topics” include, “Talk about what you do on your birthday”, “Talk about a dream you had one night” and “Talk about a time you were hurt”. I appreciate that when the game is not in play the cards are kept securely stored along with the timer inside the game tin so I don’t have to worry about cards getting lost or misplaced.
The All About You, All About Me Fun Deck® ($12.95) is another great resource in a smaller tin that is perfect for on the go or for parties and group settings when kids are just getting to know one another. We have a few new kids in our neighborhood so my son invited them to play this game and it was a lot of fun. It includes zany picture cards with basic questions to open up the conversation including “If you won a million dollars what would you do?”, “Tell me about your brothers or sisters” and “Tell me about the sports you like”. This would be a wonderful ice-breaker activity for new students in the classroom or homeschool co-op or when meeting new friends.
One of the most fun educational and social games that my children have played is Lids ‘n Lizards ($39.95)! This magnetic photo vocabulary game is a blast as players try to guess what is under each magnetic lid. There are 10 magnets in each of the categories such as food, animals, clothing, transportation and around the home. Students select a magnet and then have to name the object and identify what category it belongs to. Adding to the learning fun is the colorful lizards that I hide under the magnets. Whoever has the most lizards at the end of the game is declared the winner. My three kids absolutely LOVE playing this game and my five and six year old ask to play it all the time.
Another excellent activity to teach kids early classification skills is the MagneTalk Early Classifying Magnetic Game Board. There are so many great variations of game play for this game to keep it interesting with the object being to classify a wide variety of photo magnetic vinyl tiles. Categories include transportation, clothing, animals, food and “around the home”. This game is great to take along for long car rides or when traveling because the magnetic game board and pieces fit securely in a plastic carrying case. I like that the magnetic game board and magnetic tile pieces are sturdy so it holds up well to lots of play time…..which this game has gotten in our house!
