I’m very picky about the shows I choose to watch on TV. It has to either pique my interest or move me on a personal level. Oxygen’s I’m Having Their Baby is a show that fit both of those criteria.
I’m Having Their Baby is a docu-series that follows real life women as they prepare to give birth and give their baby up for adoption. In each episode, we get to know them on a personal level and learn more about their decision to give their baby up. We can see how their choice impacts their family, friends and how it affects each woman on an emotional level. In addition, we are also introduced to the adoptive parents and learn more about how the birth mother selected them.
I was able to watch a few episodes from Season One and I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite one. Each episode features two expectant mothers telling their unique stories. I felt like I was right there with them experiencing their emotions and pain they faced in making such a life-changing decision. I admired their strength and I’m not sure if I was in the same situation, if I could be as strong as they were. There was a few moments when I was moved to tears especially when the babies are first born and seeing the joy in the adoptive mom and dad’s faces as well in watching the birth mom sign the papers to relinquish her rights. It’s a show that you definitely need to have the tissues nearby.
Watching I’m Having Their Baby also gave me a different perspective. Though I doubt I could ever give up a child for adoption, I have a new respect for the birth moms that do. They all seem to have a common theme: wanting to provide the best possible life for their baby. It reminds me of the saying that sometimes the best decisions in life aren’t always the easiest.
One of my favorite episodes in Season One was Mercedes’ story. She is a 17 year old girl who is struggling with her decision to give up her baby girl. She’s worried about how she will feel when she comes home from the hospital without her baby and if she will still feel like she is part of her boyfriend Mikey’s family. I saw a little girl who only wanted to be loved and my heart went out to her. She gives birth to a beautiful baby girl named Vivienne. Check out this webisode, “I’m Having Their Baby: Raising Vivienne”, that is a follow up to Mercedes’ episode to see how things turned out!
I’m Having Their Baby: Raising Baby web series features updates on the birth moms, adoptive parents and baby since their episode aired. Are there any birth moms or adoptive parents from Season One that you are particularly interested in hearing more about?
