Book Review | The Poppy Lady
My husband and I think that it is important to teach our children to be respectful of the men and women who protect our nation in the armed forces. While talking about war with young children can be a sensitive topic, it is made much easier with excellent books like The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans.
The Poppy Lady is a children’s picture book by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh that is a tribute to Moina Belle Michael who was a professor at the University of Georgia in 1917 who wanted to honor the soldiers who fought valiantly in World War I. The story was inspired by actual events in which the author’s father, a soldier in World War II was in contact via letters with Moina Belle Michael. This inspirational woman sought to make the red poppy flower as the symbol to remember soldiers, many of whom were her students and friends lost all too soon.
The engaging text by Ms. Walsh and stunning, beautiful illustrated paintings by artist, Layne Johnson are breath taking. My children (and I) were captivated by this true life story and I appreciated that there was lots of additional information given by Moina Belles’ family so that it really brought her life her determination to remember the soldiers.
My seven year old son had many questions about World War I after reading this book and he was able to sit and talk to his beloved Pop Pop who was visiting us from our of state. Adam learned that he has family members who fought and were killed in every U.S. war dating all the way back to the Civil War. I found it very interesting to learn about how the poppy actually became the symbol because I never understood the story behind it until now.
I highly recommend The Poppy Lady as a must-read for all 7-10 year old children. It is appropriate for younger children too (including my 5-6 year old) however they may not understand all of the additional information included which really makes this one excellent introduction to children and World War I and II.
You are invited to visit Barbara Elizabeth Walsh online to learn more about this children’s book. The Poppy Lady is available for purchase in hardcover for the SRP of $16.95.
