My seven year old son inherited a gift for art appreciation and drawing. He will spend hours every day of his free time working on his passion. Since he is homeschooled along with his two younger siblings ages 5 and 6, we have incorporated an art class into our regular curriculum. We had considered using a private art teacher however it just wasn’t in our budget so we have been looking for alternatives option to encourage his passion for art while developing his skills.
We are currently using the See The Light series of Art Class Dvds, Vol. 1 and 2 featuring lessons 1 through 8. Incorporating Christian values, this wonderful art lessons series are proud of “drawing children to Him.” Featuring Master Artist, Pat Knepley each lesson offers basic to advanced art techniques for young artists. She is very talented and when she displays some of her artwork in a lesson, my children always exclaim, “WOW…… that is so beautiful!”
This hands-on, interactive program is very detailed and I appreciate the way that Ms. Knepley engages the children throughout each lesson. Her approach is friendly, inspirational and professional using positive reinforcement techniques and my children were very receptive to learning the techniques during each lesson. In fact, one lesson was not typically enough for one day and they would ask to do two lessons they were having so much fun and learning valuable art skills in the process.
In Art Class: Art Lessons, Volume 1 (lessons 1-4) children will learn “The Tools of the Trade”, “It All Starts with A Line”, “Contours & Composition” and “Draw What You See”. There is even a bonus lesson, “Chalk-It –Easy Chalk Art Lesson with the chalk artist, Gloria Kohlmann included with this DVD. Each lesson is just the right length to engage even younger children and my kids were so proud to show off each technique. Each lesson ends with a scripture reading and I love how the Master Artist is able to weave a biblical principle into the lesson. When the lesson is complete, the child is given an assignment to complete and there are times my son has spent one to two hours working on different skills such as shading, contouring etc.
In Art Class: Art Lessons-Volume 2 (lessons 5-8), more progressive skills are taught including “Shape Up, Pt. 1”, “Shape Up, Pt. 2”, “All About Space” and “Putting It All Together-Line, Shape & Space”. My children enjoyed the bonus lesson titled, “Creative Lettering” with Heidi Shorts.
There are additional DVD’s available in this series and I highly recommend it for young artists of all ages. You are invited to visit the See The Light website to learn more about this excellent art program which allows you to bring a Master Artist into your home or classroom in order to promote the arts to our younger generation. There are an abundance of resources available at See The Light including the Art Class, Art Project and Bible Stories series. I appreciate that the DVDs in the Art Class series are attractively priced at $14.99 each with a bundle set available for only $99.99 (that is an entire year of art lessons)! There are additional resources too including gift sets, online art classes and books.
