I Attended the Iron Man 3 Red Carpet Premiere at El Capitan Theatre! #IronMan3Event
It’s almost hard to believe I’ve been home from Los Angeles for a few days now. Normally I don’t have a ton of exciting things to add to a conversation when I’m out with friends (unless they truly enjoy hearing about me cleaning out the refrigerator or dreaming up better ways to clean the rings out of my three toilets), but everyone has been asking me about Los Angeles and what it’s like to be on a movie premiere red carpet.
The red carpet premiere for Iron Man 3 was the fourth red carpet premiere I’ve had the pleasure of attending for Disney. Each time I have walked the red carpet along side the stars of the films, I have gained a bit more confidence. Instead of turning my face from the pops and flashes of paparazzi’s cameras, I’ve come out of my shell just a little bit more to drink in all of the atmosphere.
The weather on April 24th, the night of the premiere at El Capitan Theatre, was slightly windy with a mild chill. I’d chosen my dream dress from the amazing selection at Ever Pretty Dress (the company was also nice enough to sponsor my dress for the event; I have purchased a dress from them before and most certainly will do so again!), and went with red to geek out a little with one of the colors in Iron Man’s signature suit.
As we walked along Hollywood Blvd. to the El Capitan Theatre, we could see hundreds of people behind metal barriers waiting for the arrivals of the stars and special guests for the premiere. Suddenly the noise level increased, and as I turned to see what was causing the commotion, a fancy red car surrounded by security cars was approaching. The license plate read STARK16 and was being driven by Robert Downey Jr. himself! A couple that was walking in the opposite direction as us started freaking out when they overheard others saying that it had been Robert Downey Jr.
Before Robert Downey Jr. hit the red carpet to be interviewed by the press, he stopped to sign autographs and merchandise for the people waiting outside for him. I have no idea how long these people waited outside to get their spot right against the barrier just for an opportunity to maybe have two seconds with Robert Downey Jr.
As we began our own journey down the red carpet, security gruffly ushering us down as quickly as possible, we stopped to snap pictures of ourselves against the Iron Man 3 background. But as we walked, I noticed Emily VanCamp, star of ABC’s Revenge. I am glued to the TV set any time there is a new episode. Along with her, I saw her onscreen and offscreen boyfriend, Joshua Bowman. I believe I even saw their co-star, Ashley Madwe, running around on our side of the red carpet!
It all went by so quickly, and then we found ourselves just outside of the theatre. We waited on the steps for the rest of our group to catch up, taking more relaxed photos of our surroundings. I just about lost my cool when someone said, “Look, there’s Darren Criss!” I said, “WHERE?”, and when they gestured in the direction, I realized they thought Joshua Bowman was Darren Criss. I’m fairly certain he could tell we were talking about him; he had a kind smile on his face and was camera ready. It would have been the perfect opportunity to go and talk to him and see if he’d be willing to be in a picture with me. My shyness kicked in when we made eye contact, so I stayed put and continued waiting for the rest of our group. Note to self: when a celebrity you admire has a nice reaction to being observed, seize the moment. He was entirely alone, presumedly waiting for Emily VanCamp to be finished with her red carpet interviews.
Inside of the theatre, I spotted several people I recognized, including Nick Zano and Kat Dennings. I loved Nick Zano in the ABC Family films Desperately Seeking Santa and Everything You Want, as well as his recent guest appearances on Happy Endings. After the movie was over, I noticed them again, standing against the wall next to the entrance of the Soda Fountain. They’d also been sitting in our section of the theatre, but closer to the edge of the balcony.
For me, perhaps the most exciting celebrity sightings happened just as we were leaving the theatre. Tom Hiddleston and I were standing right next to each other as I was waiting for the crowd to exit the doors. I was shaking; it was my mission to find him and somehow strike up a conversation and get a picture with him. And if he was up for it, to let me call my friend Jennifer, who is a huge fan of his, and have him leave her a quick and goofy message if she didn’t pick up. Unfortunately, we’d had to check our cameras and even our phones at the door and at this moment I was on my way out to pick up those items. As our group all started to find one another, it was hard to miss Chris Hemsworth, his gorgeous wife, and several of their friends standing near the concession stand. You wouldn’t think it’s possible for someone to make Chris Hemsworth/Thor look small, but that’s exactly what happened when Derek Theler (who is 6’5” and two inches taller than Chris) walked past with Baby Daddy co-star Chelsea Kane.
Out of any of the red carpet events I have attended, I spotted the most celebrities that are relevant to my TV and movie-watching habits at this one! It was such an incredible night, and I am still pinching myself and wondering if it was all a dream. But the proof is in the pictures–I was there!
