Precious Bones Book Review
Title: Precious Bones
Author: Mika Ashley-Hollinger
As a Florida native, I can remember a Florida that consisted of miles and miles of citrus groves and the beauty of the natural swamps and woods where I grew up as a child. Mika Ashley-Hollinger, the author of Precious Bones was also raised and Florida and brings her experience to life in a book for young adults titled Precious Bones.
This historical fiction book is set in the 1940’s and it transported me back to a time where Florida was still untamed. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, including ten year old, Bones and her best friend, Little Man. The summer of 1949 was a special time for these characters as they enjoy the innocence of fishing, hunting and enjoying the swamp. When a huge storm floods their home in the swamps and Northern real-estate agents start snooping around the plot turns. Then, two murders occur with one week shocking the small town. When Bone’s dad, Nolay who is part Miccosukee Indian is suspected of the murders Bones is determined to investigate and clear his name.
The author succeeds in presenting the Florida that I remember (though I wasn’t born until 1973) and this story line is riveting. This is a wonderful work of historical fiction for young adults and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy a good adventure and mystery story. It is a great gift idea for tweens and teens on your holiday shopping list…….
