Butter Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Review

ButterTitle: Butter [Blu-ray]

Release Date: December 4, 2012

About the Movie:

In Iowa, butter carving is as cut-throat as a Presidential election, plagued with scandal, greed, blackmail, and sex – except with butter! When long-reigning champion butter sculptor, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), is forced to step down, his zealous wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner), enters the competition herself to fight for their status as butter royalty. A win seems virtually guaranteed for the poised and studied candidate when a formidable contender emerges: the fresh-faced, effortlessly charismatic 10-year-old, Destiny (Yara Shahidi), an African-American foster child of local couple, Jill and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry). Suddenly, it’s anybody’s game and Laura will do anything to win – even if it means resorting to sabotage and seducing her foolish ex-boyfriend, Boyd (Hugh Jackman), as a co-conspirator.

My Review:

After watching the movie, Butter, I had to google to see if there was such a thing as Butter Carving. I discovered that there is and it’s popular in state fairs in the United States! I’ve never heard of such a thing until watching this movie. Who knew!

Butter is hilarious with a cast of quirky characters all involved in the Iowa State Butter Carving Competition. Laura Pickler played by Jennifer Garner is a high strung, entitlted housewife that is feared and avoided by most people in her town. When she discovers that her husband, Bob, who has dominated the world of butter carving for the past 15 years, is asked to step down to give others a chance, she is extremely upset! In her mind, the Picklers ARE the butter carvers and deserve to win every year. She ends up deciding to enter the competition herself.

Butter

In the meantime, a little girl named Destiny, discovers she also has a talent for butter carving and with the support of her new foster parents, decides to enter the competition as well. She is extremely talented and blows her competition out of the water. Laura Pickler will not have any of it though and does her best to derail her competition at every turn.

My favourite part of the movie was the final face-off at the Iowa State Fair. The entire population was packed into the hall watching the butter creations take place!

Jennifer Garner was amazing at playing Laura Pickler and made me really despise her character! I wanted to see her fail throughout the movie because she was just so AWFUL of a person! I could see why her husband went outside the marriage and had an affair. I wouldn’t be able to stand her annoying smirk and the way she is on a mission to only help herself. I was so MAD at the lengths she would go to win the competition and beat Destiny. Let’s just say she does not play fair.

Butter is definitely not a movie for kids to watch. There’s some mature scenes of a sexual nature (but no nudity). It’s rated R so make sure your kids aren’t around when you watch. The humour is definitely geared towards adults.

Pick Butter up if you want a good laugh and to be entertained with a unique satire about the art of butter!
