Title: Magic Mike (Blu-ray+DVD+UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack)

Release Date: October 23, 2012

A dramatic comedy set in the world of male strippers, Magic Mike is directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and stars Channing Tatum in the title role. The film follows Mike as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

My Review:

I loved Magic Mike. I had heard good things about it from friends of mine who had seen the movie. It actually had a really good storyline and wasn’t just all about male stripping! However, there’s lots of scenes with them dancing and they put on a great show with amazing choreography.

The movie introduces us to Mike who is a man in his early 30s doing multiple jobs to save up to for his dream business in designing custom furniture. He describes himself as an entrepreneur and really he is. He’s successful at his stripping job and he is also works as a roofer during the day. He even managed to save up an impressive $13,000 to start his furniture design business.

At his roofing job, Mike meets Adam (whom he calls “The Kid”). He brings The Kid to his stripping gig and there’s a situation where one of the performers is unable to do his number. Mike recommends The Kid perform instead. So out Adam goes with Like A Virgin playing in the background and he makes his debut. The crowd goes wild and The Kid now has a new job working as a stripper.

Matthew McConnaughey plays Dallas, the owner of the stripping company, who trains The Kid in the art of male stripping. Dallas is a kooky character and it was funny to watch him show The Kid “the moves”. I laughed at loud quite a few times at some of things Dallas said and did during the movie.

There are some more serious elements in the movie like drugs and money troubles. It’s definitely more than just a feel good type of movie about strippers and there’s some raw emotional scenes in there as well. I found I really grew to like Mike and saw that he was a good person despite his flaws. That made him feel more real to me since no one is perfect.

I have to say though that my favourite parts were the dance numbers. I bet they would be something to watch in person. I would NOT however want to go up on stage like some of the women did. I think if I went to a show like that I would stay near the back!

Magic Mike was my very first introduction to Channing Tatum. He did a phenomenal job in his role and I definitely want to see more of his movies. He’s also very attractive!

Magic Mike is definitely not for kids, but it would make a great girls night in type of movie. I couldn’t get John to watch it with me, but I think even men would enjoy it.
