Duct Tape Parenting Review
Author: Vicki Hoefle
I have three children ages 4, 5 and 7 and I have read a lot of parenting books over the years. Duct Tape Parenting is a refreshing change from many of the parenting advice books that I have read because it offers a “less is more approach to raising respectful, responsible & resilient kids”.
Written by Vicki Hoefle who is the creator of the Parenting On Track™ Program, this parenting guide for children of all ages offers a wonderful alternative to “helicopter” parenting. The author reassures us that our children are perfectly capable of problem solving while parents consciously observe and allow them to develop important real-life skills and self-confidence.
The advice given in this book is practical and effective. In fact, when I started to read this book I initially assumed (incorrectly) that I was not “that mom” who unintentionally micromanages my children. However, I had to reach for the duct tape when my four year old son insisted he was old enough to dress himself for bible school. Ultimately, does it really matter that he put on one green sock and one blue sock? In the end, he was so proud of dressing himself and after his brother whispered that his socks didn’t match he went back in and changed them before we left for church. By stepping back and observing, my son gained confidence in his own abilities and even managed to look quite handsome in the outfit that he picked out…..who would have thought he could do that without me?
Duct Tape Parenting discusses how to create a Family Roadmap and the author recommends getting out the duct tape to:
- Duct tape the relationship: Repairing Family Fractures
- Duct tape your mouth: Keeping your mind open and your mouth closed
- Duct tape your body: Quitting your job as the maid (I love this chapter!)
- Duct tape your eyes and ears: Ignoring the drama and mischief making
