Many parents I know have spoken to me about the benefits of learning and teaching sign language with your children. As babies learn to communicate, a lot of frustration can develop from their inability to express their needs and their emotions. Sign language can provide a way to ease these frustrations. I wasn’t quite sure where to begin, but Baby Sign Language has provided everything any parent needs to get started signing!
Right off the bat, I loved the large, easy to read flashcards included in the Baby Sign Language kit. The bright and colorful graphics show how to make each sign, which is very helpful for a newcomer to sign language. I came into this knowing nothing about sign language and I feel far more knowledgeable just after reviewing the materials. I want to be able to build on the signs my son has been learning with his sitter and reinforce what she is doing with him while I am at work. This kit is helping me build the confidence I need to do this.
I love the quick start guide, which makes the task of learning an entirely new language a lot more manageable. Choosing five words that you will use frequently, such as mom, dad, more, milk, all done, etc. helps parents find an easy starting point. I really like that the guide was straightforward enough to skim through within an hour and includes a record keeper in the back to track your child’s progress. The F.R.E.E. method (fun, repeat, encourage, expand) is memorable and gives a basis for how to use signs in your daily life. I especially love the emphasis on fun because too many of us feel nothing but stress these days when it comes to raising our little ones.
Also included in the kit is an A-Z sign language dictionary that contains more than 600 signs. A large poster featuring many of the most common signs is a great visual for parents as they work towards using sign language regularly. This kit truly provides everything you need to become a fluent signer and to facilitate your child in becoming one as well. Babies learn by imitation and all of us benefit from repetition, so the more you can incorporate signing into everyday activities, the faster you and your child will learn sign language.
In addition to the kit, the website is an invaluable resource for parents. Ask questions, see feedback from other parents and watch videos illustrating many of the signs. The creators of the system are working hard to build the largest online resource for baby sign language. I love the encouragement given by the admins and the emphasis put on the fact that anyone can have success with signing. Baby Sign Language has taken a very daunting task and broken it down in a way that makes it manageable for even the busiest parents.
One very lucky winner will receive the Deluxe Baby Sign Language kit, which includes the BSL Guide Book, a 600 Word Dictionary, 52 Flash Cards and the handy 24′ x 36′ Wall Chart.
