Explore the Wild West! Review
I am a big fan of the Nomad Press “Explore” series and we use these interactive books in our home school on a regular basis. The latest addition to the book series is Explore the Wild West! with 25 Great Projects by Anita Yasuda.
The kids and I were excited to “head out West” as we learned about explorers of the American West, Native Americans, cowboys, gold miners, cattle drives, frontier towns and so much more. We enjoyed the introductory chapter which was packed with information presented by the author in a straight forward, easy to understand manner that really captured my children’s interest from the start. Although the recommended age for this book is ages 6-9, my four and five year olds were just as engaged as my seven year old was in learning about the American West.
The 25 activities and projects are both educational and fun so it makes learning exciting. My seven year old son couldn’t wait to make his own clipper ship. I appreciate that this project was made using items that I already had around the house so I didn’t have to buy a lot of expensive things in order for him to make it. He was able to practice his reading skills and following directions with the outcome being a really neat Clipper Ship!
Other fun projects in this book include steps to “Make Your Own Hardtack”, “Panning for Gold” and “Make Your Own Wagon Train Board Game”. We will be learning about Native Americans in November and I will include that section of this book in our unit study. A part of this class series will be for the children to “Make Your Own” Bandolier Bag using design and beadwork to reflect their interpretation of this Native American bag.
Overall, I am very impressed with the facts and information presented by the author, lovely illustrations by Alex Kim and interesting hands-on projects.
If you are a teacher, home educator or are simply looking for fun, rainy day educational resources then I highly recommend purchasing Explore the Wild West! for only $12.95 available from Nomad Press.
