Ooka Island is the first online learning program that we have used in our home school that is specifically targeted towards my four and five year old children as opposed to my older son. This exciting educationally sound online adventure is so much fun that my children don’t even realize that they are doing it as part of their school day. More importantly in just a few weeks, I am already noticing that my children are becoming more confident in their abilities and are more eager to try to sound at words and read simple books.
What is Ooka Island? It is a program that is designed to help children learn to read by using the OokaMethod™ which is the “Eye/Ear Reading Method” which uses both phonics and text that is full of vocabulary along with reading comprehension activities. I was very pleased to note the inclusion of reading comprehension activities because that is a critical component that I found to be lacking in the online programs my older son used when he was first learning to read.
The OokaMethod™ incorporates:
- Phonemic awareness
The program is geared towards Pre-k through 2nd grade. All three of my children (ages 4, 5 and 7) are enjoying Ooka Island. My oldest son is entering into 2nd grade in the fall and reads at a 3rd grade level but he stills enjoys reading the online books and completed the activities in the adventures. Since he has a foundation in reading he was able to jump ahead on the book path by taking the OokaCompass™ which is an assessment tool which involves reading a book plus comprehension, phonemic and phonetic activities.
My four and five year old children LOVE this game and ask to “play” every day. They especially enjoy exploring the online island. Alphabet Island has been a big hit because they get to go rock climbing and then skateboard down the mountain. There are tons of other fun areas for them to explore such as Popcorn Library, Pencil Playground, the Cake Factory, Word Ball and much more. The graphics are delightfully bold and the characters are fun and engaging.
I appreciate that I can visit the OokaLighthouse™ to get a full student report updating each of my children’s progress so I can see how they are doing with the book and activities. This is a helpful way for me to understand which areas I need to focus on further in our home school class. There is even a CHEEReader™ feature that lets me send a message of online encouragement to my children such as “Great Job!” I have found that this type of positive reinforcement is an excellent motivator!
Ooka Island has affordable pricing options to suit your budget as you can pay monthly (starting at only $12.95) or choose a six month or one year plan to save even more. I love that there is a family plan too because it can get expensive with other online program when you have multiple children using the same program.
I highly recommend Ooka Island as an introduction to reading because it is an excellent early reading program. Are you ready to try it out to see if it is a good fit for your family? You are invited to visit Ooka Island to start the adventure and download the game today.
You can also sign up for a FREE 14 day trial. I am confident that you child will enjoy playing it as much as my children!
